As 2015 comes to a finish, awards for recognising the country’s best car and motorcycle have already been distributed. Award for the best car of the year was given to the Hyundai Creta, while the award for the best motorcycle of the year was awarded to the Yamaha YZF-R3. The Indian Motorcycle of the Year (IMOTY) 2016 is one of the most coveted awards in the Indian two-wheeler market.

Launched in the month of August 2015, the Yamaha YZF-R3 is the latest bike to enter the quarter-litre space with a full fairing. Chairman and Managing Director, JK Tyre & Industries Limited, Dr. Raghupati Singhania; Chairman ICOTY 2016, Bob Rupani and Chairman, IMOTY 2016, Aspi Bhathena presented the trophy to the representatives from Yamaha Motor Company.

To get their hands on two of the highest honours in the country, there were a large number of shortlisted candidates including a dozen motorcycles and cars battling it out. On 4th December 2015, the selected candidates were further assessed on various parameters. After carrying out a vote on the motorcycles, the top three contenders included the Yamaha YZF-R3, Honda CBR650F and the Benelli TNT300.

The parameters on which the bikes were judged is price, styling, fuel economy, safety, comfort, practicality, performance, value for money, technical innovation and suitability for riding them in the varying Indian conditions.

Chairman of IMOTY 2016, Aspi Bhatena said that choosing a winner for this year was the toughest in the last eight years mainly due to the fact because this year saw the introduction of a large number of capable motorcycles in various different price brackets. This was not the case in 2014 as the winner Harley Davidson was only priced at Rs. 4.5 lakhs (ex-showroom). However, the Yamaha YZF-R3 has not become a popular model yet as the Japanese company is struggling to find takers for its latest offering in India.
