Volkswagen has started testing the second-generation Tiguan SUV in Europe which will soon be previewed at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2015. For the first time in its history, the new Tiguan will be retailed in a 5-seat and 7-seat configuration.

There have been quite a few speculations, but it seems that the 5-seater version will have the same wheelbase as the current model, whereas, the 7-seater version will have a slightly longer wheelbase to offer more legroom and space for the last row of seats.

Volkswagen India might bring the 7-seat model to the country so that it can compete in the premium SUV segment and rival the likes of the Toyota Fortuner, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Santa Fe and the forthcoming Chevrolet Trailblazer. The VW Tiguan SUV will be locally assembled to keep prices in check and will most likely be powered by the Passat’s 2.0-litre 187 BHP diesel engine.

The Tiguan will be based on the famous MQB platform that underpins many other models including the new Passat and the recently revealed next generation Audi A4 luxury sedan. The German car maker is expecting most of the Tiguan’s global sales from the front-wheel drive variant but the four-wheel drive system called 4MOTION will make it to many international markets as well.

Volkswagen is looking forward to launch many SUVs in the coming future due to the evolving market trend. The company has planned two more SUVs namely the Volkswagen CrossBlue Concept-based SUV that will be a more upmarket product than the Tiguan which will be unveiled in the beginning of next year and the Volkswagen T-Roc Concept-based SUV which is already in its testing phases and will be positioned below the Tiguan. Three more products in addition to the Tiguan are expected to be launched in the coming two years.
