Volkswagen Taigun Will Not Premiere In India Anytime Soon
The Volkswagen Taigun compact SUV put in an appearance at the 2014 Delhi Auto Expo and the company tentatively announced that it could ride into India sometime around 2016. The SUV market is on the rise and models from the likes of Mahindra are becoming so popular that it has even forced Maruti Suzuki to consider introduction of vehicles in this range. The Taigun would no doubt have been received well by those who appreciate rock solid German engineering. Unfortunately, Volkswagen Passenger Cars India division Director, Michael Mayer said in an interview with ETAuto that though the company had earlier announced a probable launch in 2016, it has reconsidered plans and for the moment it has put the brakes on the launch.
It must be remembered that Volkswagen pinned high hopes on the Polo and Vento supported by a huge marketing campaign, but these two cars never really shifted into second gear. Expectations belied, Volkswagen changed its game plan and shelved plans for introduction of the Up Model and has now pushed back Taigun launch in India indefinitely.
Mr Mayer did end on a note of optimism stating, Volkswagen is upbeat about the compact sedan and compact SUV markets in India with plans afoot to introduce offerings in these segments. VW might just launch the Golf, with the new Beetle and Passat heading to Indian shores in 2015. As for SUVs and the Taigun, Volkswagen is undecided and we have to wait for future announcements.
Unveiled at the Delhi Auto Expo 2014, the Taigun had a sporty rear with an exterior spare wheel and a sporty yet minimalist interior. The Taigun was supposed to be powered by a 1 litre TSI engine outputting 109 bhp similar to the Up!
