Volkswagen India to launch sub-4 metre sedan based on the Polo platform next year
German car manufacturer Volkswagen has been slow to launch new products in the Indian market. Apart from the Polo and Vento in the hatchback and sedan category, VW doesn’t have any other products in this fast moving segment. Compared to competitors Volkswagen has been only launching updated versions of their staple products the Polo and Vento. Recently Volkswagen launched the Vento with the new 1.5 litre diesel engine coupled to 7-speed DSG gearbox. But as per reports we`ve got some exciting news that VW is planning to launch a new sub-4 metre sedan based on the Polo platform.
The sub-4 metre segment has seen a slew of launches from manufacturers like Ford, Hyundai and Honda and Tata. Clearly the success of this segment has made Volkswagen sit up and take notice. Member of the board of management of the Volkswagen brand Dr. Heinz-Jakob Neusser spoke about bringing this under-4 metre car based on the Polo to India. Dr. Heinz mentioned that the car is good looking and increasing the level of localisation content in the product will be the key to its success in the Indian market. So it is quite clear that Volkswagen India is ready with the product and will be launching it very soon in the Indian market.
Volkswagen has the right set of engines to plonk under the hood of this car. The highly acclaimed 1.2 litre TSI engine and the 1.5 litre oil burner will most likely power this new car. The competition in the sub-4 metre segment is intense and Volkswagen will have to compete with established players like Maruti, Honda, Tata and Hyundai when it launches this car in the Indian market.
