Volkswagen compact sedan spotted testing, launching soon?
The year 2013 was hit by the news of Volkswagen India starting the development of its compact sedan for the Indian market. From the first recent spy images of the sub 4-metre car, it is likely that the German carmaker is going to launch the compact sedan (codenamed Polo Stuffe) based on the Polo hatchback in the Indian market soon.
As reported by us, this new compact sedan is nothing but the Polo hatchback with an attached boot or a Vento with a shortened boot. From the spy pictures it is clear that Volkswagen wants to cash in on the growing popularity of the compact sedan segment.
The Polo based sub 4-metre sedan will use the old PQ25 platform and VW will power the vehicle with two engine options. While its petrol variant will be powered by a 1.2-litre mill, its diesel variant will get power from the familiar 1.5-litre 4-cylinder TDI motor doing duty in the Polo as well as the Vento. Both the engines will channelize the power via a 5-speed manual gearbox. If Volkswagen is sensible enough they will also plonk the 1.2 litre turbocharged TSI motor under the hood to keep the petrol heads happy.
Positioned below the Vento sedan, the new VW compact sedan will have a similar wheelbase as seen on the Polo hatchback measuring 2,456 mm. Cosmetic updates on offer will include refreshed headlamp and grille design along with similarly shaped headlamps as seen on the Vento sedan. The interiors of the car are expected to be familiar with the centre console and other bits likely to be borrowed from the Polo and Vento.
Volkswagen India is going to join the crowded but demanding compact sedan segment and once this sedan is launched, it is going to rival the likes of Honda’s Amaze, Tata’s Zest, Maruti Swift Dzire as well as Hyundai’s Xcent and the upcoming Ford Figo Aspire. It is expected to be priced higher than Maruti’s Dzire and Honda’s Amaze. With prices expected to be in the range of Rs 5.75 to Rs 8.5 lakhs (Ex-showroom), the launch of the Polo Stuffe is expected to happen sometime next year.
