Volkswagen compact sedan spied for first time, premier at 2016 Auto Expo
Volkswagen is looking to get back on track after the infamous emission scandal. The company’s next product for the Indian car market comes through a compact sedan that was just caught undergoing testing on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. The vehicle could be named as Ameo if sources are to be believed. Carrying the VW ICS codename, the car could help the German company to improve its image.
Judging through the spy shots, the taillights seem to be a direct rip-off from the Polo and Vento models with the L-shaped profile. The boot has been cut in order to make it stick under the 4-metre mark. Fortunately, it is not a notchback as many were believing it to be. It could get a small wheelbase, lesser than the Polo in fact. Parts sharing with fellow aforementioned siblings will not be a surprise.
The interior will be getting a beige colour scheme and parts like the centre console, steering wheel and seats are expected to be carried over from the Polo and Vento as well. Other than this, the VW compact sedan will be powered by the 1.5-litre, four-cylinder TDI diesel and 1.2-litre, three-cylinder MPI petrol engines, both of which will be mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. The smooth 7-speed DSG automatic transmission could be made available in the higher variants.
Officially, Volkswagen has revealed that the compact sedan will be unveiled at the upcoming 2016 Auto Expo. The car will be manufactured alongside the Polo and Vento at the company’s plant in Chakan. Requiring an investment of Rs.720 crores, the compact sedan will have to be priced well in the extremely competitive segment that has vehicles like the Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire, Ford Figo Aspire, Honda Amaze, Hyundai Xcent and Tata Zest.
The Volkswagen Golf premium hatchback was also spied testing in the country. However, the car was in the left-hand drive configuration. Stay tuned for more updates on the same.
