Volkswagen Ameo compact sedan – 5 things we know about it
Having worked hard on developing a product for the Indian market, Volkswagen’s sub-compact sedan which will be called the Ameo, and will be the company`s first major sub 4-meter car in our country. But it will be tough for the Ameo to find a good number of buyers in the segment which also offers very capable models, each of which offering their own segment best features. Hence, the Ameo will have to be a very potent model in order for it to attract many of the compact sedan buyers out there. Here are 5 things that we know about the upcoming Volkswagen Ameo.
1) Solely developed for India
For those of you who don’t know, the Volkswagen Ameo has the pleasure of being the first German car to be designed in our country. This happened because the Ameo will specifically cater to Indian audiences only (as of now at least). This also means that Ameo is the most localised Volkswagen cars till date. It will be manufactured in Volkswagen’s plant in Chakan.
2) First sub-4 metre Volkswagen in India
Ameo will be the first sub-4 metre car in India from the German car major. Though this is a latest happening, the Ameo will face stiff competition in the compact sedan segment with well-established rivals including the Ford Figo Aspire, Honda Amaze, Hyundai Xcent, Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire and Tata Zest.
3) Safest and most feature rich compact sedan
Volkswagen has promised that the Ameo will be unlike any other compact sedan retailing in the country at present. Its strong points will be an amazing build quality, best in class safety features and a great driver’s car. As the company will make it the safest car in the segment, it will get more safety tech than the Ford Figo Aspire which currently holds the tag for the safest car in its class. The Aspire comes with ABS, EBD and six airbags.
4) Design and name
Ameo is not a conventional name as such. This is because the upcoming compact sedan derives its name from the Latin word ‘Amo’, which means ‘I Love’. Hence, this means that the Ameo is expected to be tailored specifically for Indian customers. It will share a lot of its parts with the Polo and Vento, including various other styling bits. Front and side profile will be very much similar to the Polo, while the rear end will take inspiration from the Vento.
5) Same engines as Polo
When it comes down to the mechanicals, the Ameo will be powered by the same engines as the Polo. Therefore, petrol power will come from the 1.2-litre MPI motor and diesel power will come from the 1.5-litre TDI motor. Both the engines are pretty good. It will not be a surprise if the famous 7-speed DSG automatic gearbox is also offered as an option.
