Upcoming sedan cars in India in 2016
Year 2016 holds a lot more in store for the Indian automotive industry. Though sales of sedans has taken a hit with popularity of SUVs increasing, sedans continue to remain among the best driver oriented segments. So below is the list of all sedans that are expected to launch in India this year.
The Superb has always been one of the most popular premium sedans in India thanks to the oodles of legroom offered. The third-generation variant of the Skoda Superb is even more promising as it looks much more premium, is longer and has even more interior room than the current model. It will be powered by the current lot of 1.8-litre petrol and 2.0-litre diesel engines only.
Rivals – Toyota Camry, Volkswagen Passat, Honda Accord
Expected Price – Rs. 23-28 lakhs
Tata Zica sedan
Zica compact sedan will slot under the Zest when launched in 2016. To be launched in the first half of 2016, it is expected to lift Tata’s fortunes in our country. Even though the compact sedan is based on the Indica’s XO platform, the Zica is expected to better the Zest’s sales much like its recently unveiled hatchback sibling with its impressive styling and engine options.
Rivals – Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire, Hyundai Xcent
Expected Price – Rs. 4.5-5.5 lakhs
The Accord was discontinued in India after 5 years mainly because it did not offer good mileage figures. As its sales declined, models like the Toyota Camry and Skoda Superb got more sales. But, the all-new and more fuel efficient Honda Accord will be launching in India in the second half of 2016. It will be powered by the same 2.4-litre petrol engine that also powered the previous model.

The newly revealed S90 is one of the best looking Volvo’s ever. With a masculine and sleek design language, the luxury sedan is also one of the safest cars from the Swedish car company, deriving most of its safety technology from the XC90 SUV. It is expected to give the German luxury cars a good run for their money when launched globally. Its Indian launch is expected in October 2016.

Expected Price – Rs. 60-70 lakhs
The new generation Passat is all set to make its way to India. It looks much more premium and sleek as compared to the outgoing model. Even though the new model is shorter than the current version, the upcoming model has a longer wheelbase to provide more legroom for the rear passengers and a larger boot as well. It should help improve Volkswagen’s sales in the premium segment with a launch expected to take place in mid-2016.

Volkswagen Compact sedan
Volkswagen is one of the few remaining car companies to launch a compact sedan in India. As a result of this, the company is losing out on sales as compact sedans are amongst the best selling cars in India. VW`s compact sedan will sit between the Polo hatch and Vento sedan in Volkswagen’s Indian portfolio, and will share engines with the Polo. It will also share many parts with other VWs when launched somewhere in mid-2016.

Expected Price – Rs. 5.5-8.5 lakhs
One of the most popular D-segment sedan of its time, the new Cruze is expected to come to India in the last quarter of 2016. Based on the new F2 AWD platform, the Cruze has the goods to become a popular model in the not so popular segment in India. It looks amazing and gets a newly designed dual-cockpit dashboard as well. It might be powered by a 1.4-litre petrol and 1.6-litre diesel engine in our country.
Rivals – Toyota Corolla Altis, Hyundai Elantra, Skoda Octavia, Volkswagen Jetta
Expected Price – Rs. 16-20 lakhs
The baby Jag is one of the most appealing sedans to come from the Indian-owned British car company. Powering it will be 2.0-litre petrol and diesel engines that have been tuned to offer amazing fuel economy without compromising on performance. The sports oriented Jaguar XE S model with a 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine is also on the launch cards. It is expected to hit the Indian shores in the first half of 2016.
Rivals – Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Audi A4, BMW 3-Series
Expected Price – Rs. 35-45 lakhs
Expected to launch in August 2016, the new XF luxury sedan promises to be a major improvement over the outgoing model. Thanks to a new aluminium architecture, it weighs a massive 190 kg lesser than its predecessor. With lots of design cues taken from the new XE and F-Type, it offers segment best legroom. Engine options will include a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder and 3.0-litre V6 petrol and diesel motors.

Expected Price – Rs. 55-75 lakhs
Toyota has been missing out on good volumes in India as it does not retail a C-segment sedan presently. However, this is about to change with the Vios that could launch in July 2016. Taking styling cues from the Corolla Altis, the Vios promises to be a good overall product. Set to compete alongside the segment king Honda City, the Vios will be powered by a 1.5-litre petrol and a 1.4-litre diesel engine.

Expected Price – Rs. 7-10 lakhs
The new generation Sonata is set to arrive in India by October 2016. Sticking to the Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 design philosophy, details of the new model is still unknown till now. But, it will be the first production model to feature Android Auto. Plug-In Hybrid model of the new Hyundai Sonata will also be introduced at a later stage.

Probably the most famous hybrid car in the world, the Prius is one of the most revolutionary car for the electric car technology. After selling the previous generation model for a while, the Prius has finally got an all-new model that looks much better now. It features better hybrid system in addition to a futuristic design that should help in improving its sales given the rising pollution the world over. It will launch in the second half of 2016.

One of the most popular D-segment sedans in India, the Elantra has now lost its initial shine. The new model will refresh things up for Hyundai with a more premium and elegant looking design language. Expected to launch in August 2016, the sedan will continue to be powered by the existing 1.8-litre petrol and 1.6-litre diesel engines in our country. However, an automatic variant might be made available.
Rivals – Toyota Corolla Altis, Skoda Octavia, Chevrolet Cruze, Volkswagen Jetta
Expected Price – Rs. 12-15 lakhs
The next generation Audi A4 is based on the new MLB Evo platform that has helped in shedding 120 kg, even though it is longer than the current model. Unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show this year, the new A4 gets sleeker headlights and taillights that makes the car look much better than before. The A4 will also come with an emergency braking system that turns on the hazard lights under heavy braking after the car stops.

Expected Price – Rs. 37-42 lakhs
Younger brother of the A7 Sportback, the A5 will come to India next year. With the range of performance oriented cars launched in India this year, Audi could bring in the A5’s Coupe version as well. Though the current A5 has been the same since 2012, the updated model is also expected to be launched in 2016. The car will be powered by 1.8-litre and 2.0-litre petrol engines and is expected to launch in the second half of next year.

Expected Price – Rs. 40-50 lakhs
BMW 1-Series sedan
BMW is the only luxury car maker in India to not offer an entry-level sedan priced around Rs. 25 lakhs (ex-showroom). Hence, the company will soon be launching the 1-Series sedan. It is expected to launch come May 2016. Based on its hatchback counterpart’s front-wheel drive format, the sedan will be a very good proposition to consider in addition to being BMW’s first front-wheel drive sedan.

Expected Price – Rs. 25-30 lakhs
The 3-Series facelift will be coming to India very soon. With a launch expected to take place at the 2016 Auto Expo, the updated model just features redesigned headlights, updated taillights and tweaked bumper designs at the front and rear end. Major changes come in the mechanical domain including a new chassis that is said to offer a better handling drive than before. Along with the usual petrol and diesel engines, a hybrid variant called BMW 330e could also be launched.

Expected Price – Rs. 35-45 lakhs
The top-end luxury sedan from BMW could see a launch at the upcoming Auto Expo in February 2016. Though the current design remains majorly unchanged, the headlights are sleeker and come with laser lights. Front fog lamps and taillights will be LED powered. The upcoming model is 90 kg lighter and longer than the outgoing model as well. Engines will include a 3.0-litre petrol, 4.4-litre V8 petrol and a 3.0-litre diesel.

Expected Price – Rs. 1-1.5 crores
The iconic muscle car will finally be launched in India, in February 2016. With sales of luxury and performance oriented cars booming in our country, Ford is all set to launch its halo product very soon. Powering the sports car will be a 5.0-litre V8 engine that offers performance figures unlike any other car in its price bracket.

Expected Price – Rs. 60-80 lakhs
Expected to launch in the second half of next year, the new E-Class will be in line with the C-Class and S-Class models in all domains. The 2017 facelift model is 100 kg lighter and 55mm longer than the current version. The existing 2.0-litre petrol, 2.2-litre diesel and 3.0-litre diesel engines could power the luxury sedan. However, new engines offered internationally might also make their way to India.
