The upcoming Mahindra compact SUV to be powered by a new petrol engine
The homegrown auto giant Mahindra & Mahindra is bracing itself big time to beat market competition and reinstate its position as the leading SUV maker of India. The company is busy developing new platforms, technology and engines for an entire new range of products for both Mahindra and its South Korean subsidiary Ssangyong. The Indian car maker is almost ready to introduce its brand new engine range that will be powering the future Mahindra and Ssangyong vehicles. This new family of potent motors will be based on a common platform and will be responsible in churning out a range of entirely new diesel and petrol mills of various capacities as well as configurations.
The President of Mahindra & Mahindra’s auto business, Mr. Pawan Goenka has confirmed to the media about it by saying that he is very happy with the way the company’s engine development is progressing. Mahindra & Mahindra has developed a new range of engines, which will include a 1.2 litre diesel as well as petrol mills, a 1.6 litre diesel and petrol engine, and a 1.5 litre diesel motor. He further added that the company also has the option of developing 1.5 litre petrol and a 1.0 litre petrol mill. Thus, based on an entirely new platform, a total of seven possible motors are being planned by Mahindra & Mahindra.
Goenka added that while some of the motors are more intended to be used in the SsangYong vehicles, the others are more Mahindra centric. Nevertheless, all these new engines will be utilized by both Mahindra as well as SsangYong as per the companies’ requirements.
In this huge engine development project, Mahindra is reported to have invested about Rs. 700 crore. A 4-cylinder 1.6 litre and a 4-cylinder petrol and diesel mill will be powering the Ssangyong X100 in early 2015. The X100 is meant for the international car markets and will not be offered in India. However, Goenka confirms that the Indian car market will get a new vehicle launch in 2015 that will be powered by new 1.2 litre petrol and diesel engine.
The new 1.2 litre engine is a 3-cylinder slashed version of the same X100’s 1.6 engine to get the excise duty benefits in India for sub-four meter cars. This new 1.2 litre petrol mill is expected to generate about 80bhp and is going to debut under hood of the Mahindra compact SUV S101 which is scheduled to launch in 2015. The S101 won’t get the 1.5 diesel engine at launch as, Goenka says that the new 1.5-litre diesel will perhaps launch in late 2017 or 2016 powering a future Mahindra vehicle.
Mahindra & Mahindra is a diesel centric manufacturer, but is well aware of the not so bright future of diesel cars as the fuel price increases steadily. Thus, the company is working hard on advanced technologies to develop new petrol engines.
