UM Motorcycles to commence Indian operations with a 400cc motorcycle
American Bike manufacturer UM Motorcycles is the next big player that is getting ready to introduce its bikes in the country in partnership with Lohia Auto industries.
As per UML Head of Sales, Joji John, the first bike to be launched will be a 400cc, single-cylinder engine motorcycle, either a Cruiser or a Scrambler or even both. The 400 cc bikes for the Indian market are being specially designed and engineered to suit the Indian conditions. As per reports UM motorcycles India will price the bikes very aggressively in the region of Rs 1.5 lakhs on-road.
Looking at UM Motors International website, the auto manufacturer sells many competent products in the overseas markets. As per sources the bike maker is not going to try any CKD or CBU routes for its products, but adapt to the long-term strategy of locally manufacturing its bikes at their Kashipur unit in Uttarakhand. It is said that its Indian manufacturing plant will have a targeted installed capacity of 100,000 units annually.
With its plans to enter the Indian market, UML is hopeful of launching its bikes around the festive season this year. The company plans to launch new bikes every 6 months, their next round of models to hit the Indian shores is likely to be around Feb 2016, and will be in the price range of Rs 1.20-1.50 lakhs (on-road).
UM Motorcycles also plans to have its first corporate head office in the capital city, New Delhi, while its regional offices will be set up during the second half of 2015 mostly in cities like Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru or Chennai. By August 2015, UM Motors plans to set up close to 30 sales and service centers across the country.
