Despite being snazzy, Indian vehicles used to lag behind when it came to safety standards. Toyota has changed the course with the Innova Crysta by clinching a 4-star rating for overall safety at the ASEAN NCAP. And it’s time to rejoice as the Toyota Innova Crysta equipped with ESC (Electronic Stability Control) secured a full 5-star rating. Since the 2016 Innova launched in Indonesia isn’t equipped with ESC as standard, it got a 4-star rating; while the ESC equipped models not just scored 14.10 out of 16.00 points to qualify for a 5-star rating but also gets AOP (Adult Occupant Protection). The second generation MPV is expected to hit the Indian car market by mid-2016 but has already been launched in Indonesia.
Innova Crysta scored a whopping 76 percent for Child Occupant Protection which is good for a vehicle with 4-star rating. The Innova Crysta powered by a four-cylinder, 2.0-litre petrol unit was put through the test, and is said to churn out 139 PS and 183 Nm of peak torque. The tested motor fuels the second generation MPV in Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines and Vietnam. The same motor is expected to power the Innova Crysta in India if the Supreme Court ban in Delhi continues or gets expanded to other cities on diesel cars with displacement of over 2000 cc.
The 2016 Innova Crysta displayed at recently concluded Delhi Auto Expo 2016 is equipped with host of features like seven airbags, smart entry with start/stop button for ignition, touchscreen infotainment system with satellite navigation, cruise control, auto close for tailgate and several others. Expect the India spec model to be powered by a GD 2.4-L diesel unit that churns out 149 PS and 342 Nm of peak torque, and is coupled with a 5-speed transmission. The 6-speed automatic transmission is said to kick 360 Nm of peak torque. No official statement has been released confirming the powertrains. Highlighting the safety features, Innova Crysta gets EBD, ABS, dual front airbags, seat belt reminders, ISOFIX mounts and Brake Assist as standard across all variants; while the higher trim features side airbags, ESC and many more.
