Toyota Fortuner with a 2.5 litre diesel engine to launch in October
Toyota Fortuner has been a huge success for the Japanese manufacturer. A product in this price bracket has rarely been seen doing numbers this good. Now to boost the sales of the Fortuner even further, Toyota is coming up with a 2.5 litre variant of this popular SUV. A 2.5 litre Fortuner has been rumoured for a long time now. It will obviously be priced lower than the current model and would appeal to a wider range of audience. The new 2.5 litre Toyota Fortuner would enter a different price segment and thus would cause trouble for cars that sit in this segment.
The upcoming Fortuner will feature a 2.5 litre diesel engine and will come as a two wheel drive model. It is reported that the engine will generate a peak power of 142 bhp which is quite healthy. It will come with a manual gearbox and there are hardly any chances of an automatic gearbox being offered with this engine. It is reported that the launch will take place in the month of October. In the line-up, it would sit below the models that are powered by the 3.0 litre engine.
We are expecting a price tag of Rs.20 lac for this new SUV which would be considerably lower than the price of the 3.0 litre version. It is also being reported that Toyota India will introduce a new top of the line variant for the Fortuner. This new variant will come with automatic gearbox and four wheel drive. It will be powered by the 3.0 litre diesel engine. Power and torque figures are expected to be the same as the current models. Enthusiasts looking for the ease of an automatic would really appreciate this new model. Until now there weren’t many serious off roading packages on offer with automatic transmission.
The 2.5 litre Fortuner would make this SUV even more popular. It will compete with vehicles like Skoda Yeti and Ssangyong Rexton. The Toyota brand is associated with excellent build quality and reliability. These have been the key factors for Toyota`s success worldwide and with the Fortuner being more affordable; things will just get better for them. The Skoda Yeti that will go against this new variant has recently been updated by the Czech manufacturer. It is a very potent product but has been a failure in the Indian market. It is because it lacks the strong presence most other SUVs have and also because of the poor after sales support. The Fortuner trumps it in terms of road presence and it would be a strong selling point for the new variant.
The other SUV that will compete with the 2.5 litre Toyota Fortuner is the Ssangyong Rexton. The Rexton was priced lower than the similarly equipped Fortuner but that wasn’t enough to post impressive sales. With the new low cost 2.5 litre Toyota Fortuner coming in, things would get more difficult for the Ssangyong Rexton.
