Tata Zest Triggers Price War, Undercuts Competition

The much awaited Tata Zest with its all new Revotron 1.2T engine is officially launched and has pulled the road from under the wheels of competitors such as Hyundai and Maruti both on performance and price. These two are not the only brands to get the jitters. Chevrolet Sail, and Verito Vibe diesel from Mahindra are also feeling the heat.

The feisty Zest petrol variant carries a price tag of Rs. 4.64 lakhs, the lowest in its segment with the Maruti Suzuki Dzire petrol model costing Rs. 4.85 lakhs and the Hyundai Xcent priced at Rs. 4.70 lakhs. Even in diesel class the Zest price tag reads Rs. 5.64 lakhs but it is only slightly higher than the Xcent diesel. Price is one thing, performance is another. The Zest boasts of the Revotron 1.2T, a revolutionary engine long in the making with efforts of 6000 engineers going into its making. With the Revotron engine under the hood Tata has upped the ante in the petrol segment while it has also taken on the competition with an automatic diesel model. Tata Jaguar division did well and earned huge profits while the Indian local car division was languishing. Hopes run high at Tata that the Zest will reverse its deceleration. May be Tata priced it low enough considering it was making enough profits from Jaguar and wanted to gain more than a toehold in domestic markets with the Zest spearheading its thrust.

Only the petrol version features the Revotron Engine. This is an all new 1193 cc engine developed in various tech centres around the world. With turbojet technology, it pumps out 90PS at 5000 RPM and 140Nm of torque between 1750 to 3500 RPM. It features a 2 valve per cylinder SOHC configuration and a unique 75×67.5mm bore/stroke setup for smooth torque output. The diesel variants of the Zest are powered by Tata’s Quadrajet engine outputting 74 bhp and 89 bhp mated to a five speed transmission. The AMT gearbox is an optional. The only automatic diesel car in the segment, the Zest is clearly no lemon and could become the favorite of city commuters.
