Tata Osprey compact SUV (Ecosport rival) launching next year
Tata Motors had revealed the sub- 4 meter compact SUV ‘Nexon’ concept at the 2014 Auto Expo. Conceived on the same platform underpinned by the Bolt and Zest, the concept version was indeed aimed at giving a sneak peek into the Ford EcoSport rivalling compact SUV that featured Tata’s contemporary trademark design.
Rumours are abuzz that a prototype of the production version conceived on the Nexon concept is out. The prototype is known as Tata Osprey internally and the nomenclature is in tandem with Tata’s custom of naming new models after birds. Nothing much has been revealed about the SUV as of now but it is likely that the cabin will get a seven-seat layout. Most of the design cues will remain unchanged as seen on the Nexon concept. However, the seven-seat layout suggests that the prototype may have to ditch the sub-four meter length in order to accommodate the seven occupants.
There could be two engine choices including one petrol and one diesel engine borrowed from the Zest range. Powering the petrol variants could be the 1.2 litre, four cylinder, turbocharged Revotron engine developing 90 PS. Diesel variants on the other hand may feature a fiat sourced 1.3 litre, MultiJet diesel engine outputting 90 PS. A five-speed manual gearbox is likely to be paired to both the engines while an AMT tranny could be coupled to diesel engine. Tata could launch the new compact SUV in India either late next year or early 2017. Expect prices to be in the Rs 6 lakh to Rs 10 lakh range.
