Tata Nexon AMT to be offered with both petrol and diesel engines
If recent speculations are to be believed, the Tata Nexon AMT variant will be launched with both petrol and diesel engine options. The Indian carmaker hasn’t made any official announcement regarding this as of now. However, the Nexon AMT has already been spotted in India, pointing towards a nearing launch. Reports also suggest that the new automatic variant of the Nexon is expected to be launched around the new year.
The Nexon is scheduled to be launched in India on September 21, 2017. The compact SUV will be available with 2 engine options – a 1.2-litre turbo petrol and a 1.5-litre turbo diesel. Initially, both these engines will come with only a 6-speed manual gearbox. However, Tata has already started working on an automatic gearbox, which will likely be offered with both the engines.
The gearbox in question will be an AMT unit sourced from Magneti Marelli. Tata already uses AMT gearboxes from this supplier in the Nano, Zest and Tiago. However, all these models get a 5-speed transmission, while the Nexon is expected to come with a 6-speed AMT transmission. Hence, it will be the first Tata vehicle to get a 6-speed AMT automatic variant.
The Nexon will mark Tata’s entry into the highly competitive compact SUV segment, which already includes well-established competitors like the Maruti Vitara Brezza, Ford EcoSport and Mahindra TUV300. However, Tata is relying on multiple segment-first features, a contemporary design and an affordable price tag to ensure that the Nexon gets satisfactory customer response post its India launch. The addition of an AMT gearbox, on both petrol and diesel engines, will thus further expand the vehicle’s appeal and will help in bringing more customers on board.
