Tata Motors working on an all new SUV based on the Land Rover
Tata Motors is looking to change the way consumers perceive its products. The company has made the right moves by launching the Zest compact sedan and Bolt hatchback under the Horizonext strategy. Both the products have been well received by the public and have moved away from Tata`s old school design language.
Now what a little birdie tells us is that the first product to originate from the partnership between Tata Motors and Land Rover will be an all new SUV under the codename Q501. What`s interesting is the fact that the Q501 will be built using the same platform as the Discovery Sports L550. The Q501 will compete with Mahindra XUV 500 at the lower end of the segment and the Toyota Fortuner at the higher end. Though the new SUV from Tata Motors will share formational parts with the Land Rover, both the products will be entirely different in terms of design and even the powertrain will not be shared between the two cars. Tata Motors is considering Fiat`s 2.0 Multijet II motor which produces around 150 – 175 bhp for the Q501. There is also a possibility of Tata Motors using a lower powered version of the same engine.
Tata Motors has set targets to ensure that the cost of the SUV is kept under control, but this seems impossible at the moment as this engine is currently not manufactured in India and will need to be imported initially. Tata will have to wait till Fiat localizes this motor at its engine plant in Ranjangoan. Let`s hope the Q501 finds its foothold in the Indian market and gives Tata the much needed boost in the Indian SUV market.
