Tata Motors readying its brand new Kite compact hatch for 2015
It has been a very rough ride for Indian car major Tata Motors during the last two years. The Indian automobile giant bled a lot of market share to its gaining rivals and went down the ranking ladder as well. Tata Motors is thus, working very hard to stop the loss of its market share and gain back its lost glory. As a result, the company is concentrating on rolling out entirely new capable car models to get customer attention and boost sales. Tata Motors has already launched its Zest compact sedan which is very successful. The Zest will soon be followed by the Bolt hatchback which is a slashed down version of the sedan. However, the Indian car major has more up its sleeve; another all-new hatchback to fight in the extremely popular compact car segment.
Tata Motors is reportedly working on an entirely new hatchback model that will be placed below the Bolt hatchback. This new hatch is known by its codename XO or the Kite. The new Tata Kite will be based on the company’s all time popular Indica’s platform. Post launch, the Kite is expected to rival compact cars such as the Maruti Wagon R and the very popular Maruti Celerio. The new Tata Kite hatchback will boast of a fresh design language with styling cues from the new Tata line-up like the Zest, Bolt and the upcoming Nexon compact SUV concept that was unveiled at the 2014 Auto Expo. The Tata Kite is expected to get fresh styling with no similarities to older Tata models, unlike the Zest and Bolt which have slight styling cues from the Vista. And as per the sources, the Kite’s design language will be much more impressive than the Zest or the Bolt.
The Kite or the XO hatchback will also feature totally new interiors. However, few features like the seats and steering wheel could be shared with that of the Bolt in order to keep the price low. Similar to the Indica, the Kite is also expected to offer plenty of interior room and boot space, despite its compact form. The new Tata Kite will be powered by the newly developed 1.05 litre 3-cylinder diesel mill which will be mated to a 5 speed manual transmission. This new diesel engine is expected to deliver 64.1bhp of max power and 14.27kgm of peak torque. This new Motor is expected to go under the hood of many more Tata products in the future.
The Kite hatchback will be powered by both diesel and petrol motors and its petrol variant will be equipped with a new 1.2 litre petrol motor. CNG and LPG variants of the Kite are also expected later on, as is the AMT variant. The new Tata Kite will eventually replace the age old and very popular Indica hatchback in India. The Kite will be Tata’s all-new sub-4 meter hatch and will be priced very competitively like all Tata offerings.
