Suzuki developing two new diesel engines

Maruti Ertiga

Next generation Ertiga to get Suzuki`s 1.5 litre diesel motor

Considering the high demand for the diesel cars in the global market, Japanese car maker Suzuki is developing two new diesel motors, namely a 1.6 litre mill and a smaller 1.5 litre engine based on the new 800cc engine. The first diesel engine is meant for the European car market where diesel cars are popular, while the second one is for the Indian market which has a high demand for diesel cars.

Suzuki’s very important Indian subsidiary, Maruti Suzuki is the largest car manufacturer in India and sells a number of vehicles across the several segments in the Indian auto industry out of which many models are segment leaders. While Maruti Suzuki offers a range of petrol engines under the hoods of its cars, the company has no diesel engine of its own and depends on the sourced diesel mills from the Italian car maker, Fiat. At present, Maruti offers the single Fiat diesel engine under the hood of its popular cars such as the Swift, Swift DZire, Ertiga, Ritz and the newly launched Ciaz sedan. This very potent Fiat sourced diesel engine that Maruti depends on, is the 1.3 litre DDiS Multijet motor which offers great ride and refinement. This oil-burner is also a very reliable and highly fuel efficient motor. However, the Indian car market is packed with diesel cars, and Maruti knows that it simply can’t handle the massive market competition with this single Fiat engine and it really needs to bring in more powerful, frugal and refined engines to reinforce its market dominance.

Maruti Suzuki is already known to have been working on a new compact 800cc diesel engine for its compacts cars. While this small 800cc diesel mill, which is supposed to be smallest diesel engine in India after it gets introduced, has been in news for quite some time, the news about the two new diesel engines recently surfaced. It has come into light that Suzuki is designing and developing two 4 cylinder diesel motors that are also based on the same new 800cc engine from the company. The bigger and more powerful 1.6 litre engine will be launched in the European market, while the 1.5 litre unit will be used exclusively for the company’s offerings in India.

As per reports the next generation Ertiga MPV will be getting this new 1.5-litre diesel mill under its hood. Moreover, the refreshed model of the newly launched Ciaz, which is expected by 2017, will also get the new diesel engine. Maruti Suzuki’s upcoming SUV and MPV are also expected to get this new engine. While diesel cars are still highly popular in India and other global markets, the popularity of the diesel cars are expected to wane in India in near future, as the price gap between petrol and diesel fuel is constantly decreasing. However, the huge demand has prompted Suzuki to develop the new diesel engines with the help of the R&D department of Maruti in India.
