Suzuki Baleno and next generation Swift to get 1.0-litre Boosterjet engine
Suzuki created quite a buzz in the international automotive market when it revealed the new 1.0-litre Boosterjet engine with the iK-2 concept. The new series of engines became famous overnight. The Japanese car maker has finally decided to bring the engine to a production model with the upcoming Baleno and the next generation Swift as well.
That’s right people! The two hatchbacks will be powered by the new 1.0-litre turbocharged engine. Production of the Baleno has already begun at the company’s plant in Gurgaon, Haryana. Part of Suzuki’s new range of turbocharged, direct-injection petrol engines, the 1.0-litre turbocharged engine is accompanied by a larger 1.4-litre turbocharged unit as well. However, the bigger 1.4-litre unit will not be brought to India anytime soon and it will debut in China instead.
The upcoming Suzuki Baleno hatchback that will carry a different name in the Indian car market will be placed above the very successful Swift hatchback in the company’s portfolio. It will go head on with the Hyundai Elite i20 and the very successful Honda Jazz in the premium hatchback space.
Suzuki’s first locally produced diesel engine family was first launched with the Celerio diesel in the form of an 800cc twin-cylinder motor. The second diesel mill is a 1.5-litre four-cylinder motor that will also power the next generation Swift. The company’s upcoming compact SUV which carries the YBA codename will first be launched with the very famous 1.3-litre DDiS engine with the new mild-hybrid SHVS technology.
Only time will tell whether the 1.0-litre Boosterjet petrol engine will make it to other models in the coming future or not. In the meantime, let’s hope Maruti Suzuki does not disappoint us with the Baleno hatchback when it makes its debut in the Indian market, because everyone is waiting for yet another iconic battle in the premium hatchback segment.
