Mahindra launched the next generation Scorpio last month and the SUV has garnered more than 10,000 bookings within a month`s time. This shows the demand and craze for the Scorpio which made its debut in the Indian market in 2002. Since then many upgrades have been given to the Scorpio and the car has been the beneficiary of three distinguished awards namely: ‘Best Car of the Year and Best SUV of the Year’ awarded by BBC World Wheels and ‘Car of the Year’ award from Business Standard Motoring.

Scorpio is Mahindra`s most successful urban SUV till date and last month the new generation Scorpio was launched, but only with a manual transmission. But this left many fans disappointed as there was no automatic variant on offer.

There is some good news for consumers waiting for a reliable and affordable SUV with an automatic transmission. Mahindra is testing an automatic variant of the Scorpio SUV and an exclusive spyshot of the vehicle has been snapped on the Delhi-Gurgaon highway. The test vehicle was spotted with an automatic badge on it. The previous generation Scorpio automatic had the same type of badging and it`s quite possible that the automatic variant will be available only in the top of the line trim. Automatics are slowly gaining popularity in India due to traffic congestion and auto manufacturers are bringing in automatic variants of their existing line-up to cash in on the trend.

The new Mahindra Scorpio automatic will use the same punchy 2.2 litre mHawk diesel engine that produces 120bhp of power and 280Nm of torque. The mHawk utilizes a top mounted intercooler to improve the efficiency of the turbocharger. The new model will also use the same 6-speed Bosch transmission that was used on the old Scorpio automatic. If the automatic variant will be launched only in the top of the line S10 2WD trim, expect it to be priced at Rs.13 Lakhs (ex-showroom, Mumbai), which makes it about 1 lakh more than the S10 manual variant. Mahindra has not disclosed any details regarding the launch date of the new Scorpio automatic; we expect it to be launched sometime in 2015.
