Spied: 2016 Skoda Rapid facelift
Spied doing rounds on a road-test earlier, fresh images of the facelifted version of Skoda Rapid have surfaced yet again. The closest shots of the updated sedan reveal that it will continue to bear significant hints of the outgoing model and isn’t exactly what we call an all-new model. The fresh model looks superior indeed but stands no comparison to the one sold in Europe. The new Euro-spec Rapid finding its way to India has just one constraint- the MQB platform on which it is based will make it too costly for India.
The Skoda Rapid available in India desperately needs a makeover; a renovated model is therefore being introduced to retain its relevance. The 2016 Skoda Rapid facelift will now flaunt a reshaped front grille with chrome outline, the front bumper appears sportier and it gets sharper headlamps. As seen on the Volkswagen Vento, the refreshed Rapid might also sport LED tail lamps which now have an updated lighting pattern. The facelifted version should definitely feature upgraded wheels; it is however difficult to imagine that the Czech carmaker will move over the existing 15-inch size.
Inside the cabin, the refreshed Rapid will look similar to the outgoing model. Expect an updated touchscreen infotainment system along with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Coming to its mechanicals, the new Rapid will be powered by the same 1.6-L petrol and 1.5-L diesel engine. The petrol unit delivers 103 bhp of power and 153 Nm of twist, while the diesel motor generates 103 bhp and maximum torque of 250 Nm. Along with the 5-speed manual transmission, the diesel engine will also be mated to a 6-speed DSG gearbox. The 2016 Skoda Rapid facelift is expected to launch in the second half of 2016 and will be priced around the Rs. 10 lakh mark.
