Spec comparison of Mercedes-Benz GLA and its rivals
The Indian luxury car market is booming and the entire auto industry is all set to rebound after a slow growth phase during the last 3 years. To cash in the lucrative Indian market, the luxury car makers are all geared up to launch new models in the country. Mercedes-Benz is no exception to this, and is all set to expand its product range in India with the launch of its compact SUV GLA. The Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class is scheduled to launch on the last day of this month that is, 30th September, 2014 which is also the peak period of this year’s festive season.
The Mercedes-Benz GLA will be offered with two engine options namely – 2.0 litre petrol and 2.2 litre diesel motors, both of which will be mated to a 7-speed transmission. Like the compact SUV segment, the entry level luxury compact crossover market in India is also highly popular, in which the Mercedes-Benz GLA is quite a late entrant. The GLA crossover from Mercedes will have to compete with the likes of BMW X1, Audi Q3, and the Volvo V40 Cross Country.
Lets us compare the upcoming Mercedes-Benz GLA crossover against its market rivals to see how it fares.
The Mercedes-Benz GLA will get a 1991cc, 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine generating 181bhp power and 30.59kg torque, while its familiar 2143cc, 4-cylinder, turbocharged diesel motor will deliver 170bhp and 41kgm. The GLA will get only a front wheel drive system.
The Audi Q3 gets a 1968cc, 4-cylinder diesel turbocharged motor which is available in two states of tune – 138bhp and 32.6kgm of torque/ 174bhp and 38.7kgm of torque. The Q3 is offered in both front-wheel drive and an all-wheel drive Quattro system.
The BMW X1 is powered by a 1995cc, 4-cylinder, turbocharged diesel mill producing 181.03bhp and 38.7kgm of torque mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox with a rear-wheel drive system.
Powering the Volvo V40 Cross Country is a 1984cc, 5-cylinder, turbocharged diesel engine outputting 150bhp and 35.7kgm of torque mated to a 6-speed automatic gearbox with a front-wheel drive system.
The Mercedes-Benz GLA has a wheelbase of 2699mm, while both the Audi Q3 and the Volvo V40 get a slightly shorter wheelbase of 2603mm and 2646mm respectively. In the Indian compact luxury SUV segment, the BMW X1 has the longest wheelbase of 2760mm.
Mercedes-Benz GLA is 4417mm long and beats both the Audi Q3 and Volvo V40 in this department. However, the BMW X1 again leads the pack being 37mm longer than the GLA.
However in width, the BW X1 is the narrowest of the lot, while the Mercedes-Benz GLA is narrower than both Audi Q3 and Volvo V40.
The Audi Q3 is the tallest in the segment, while the Mercedes-Benz GLA is only taller than the Volvo V40.
The Mercedes-Benz GLA is the only model in this segment that is going to be offered in petrol and diesel options. Thus, it will be the only choice for the petrol loving entry luxury compact SUV buyers in India. The Mercedes-Benz GLA diesel packs in the biggest motor and makes more torque than all its rivals, thus offering better drivability.
