Skoda To Benefit From VW-Tata Motors’ Partnership, Future Cars To Be Developed on Tata AMP Platform

If reports are to be believed, Skoda Auto might develop an entry-level sedan and a compact SUV underpinned by Tata Motors’ flexible Advanced Modular Platform (AMP) for the Indian market. Just so you remember, Tata Motors and Volkswagen announced a product development partnership at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show that would enable the carmakers to share platforms and technologies to bring down the Research & Development costs. Skoda does not have a presence in the compact vehicle segment, this joint venture can open doors for the Czech auto major to introduce new products. Also, Skoda can make a comeback into the high-volume small car space.

Skoda Rapid happens to be the most affordable vehicle in its India line-up. Segments like sedans, compact SUVs and hatchbacks are much popular in the country; Skoda at present does not have anything to offer in these spaces. Benefitting from the Tata-VW partnership, the Czech carmaker will launch the first model in the country in the year 2019. The AMP platform is said to be highly-flexible and can be utilized to manufacture variety of vehicle types and at the same time offering high degree of familiar parts across the product lines. Skoda has been working relentlessly on fixing issues related to customer experience and service quality at dealerships and is now geared-up to focus on product strategy.

The products to be developed with Tata Motors will be finalized once the joint working procedures are closed by Volkswagen. Skoda has realized the need to think local so as to have strong foothold in the Indian market, for the very same reason Rapid facelift has been developed locally that turned out to be more cost effective for the carmaker too. The launch of Skoda Kodiaq SUV in the domestic market is expected soon, while the updated Octavia sedan might also reach us in the coming 2 months. The ageing Yeti is also to be replaced by Karoq compact SUV, the test mule has been spied several times doing test rounds and is expected to be unveiled at the 2018 Auto Expo in Delhi.
