Scoop : Upcoming Maruti Suzuki S-Cross caught testing in India
India’s largest car maker, Maruti Suzuki had showcased two cars at the Auto Expo 2014, namely the Ciaz midsized sedan and the SX4 S-Cross crossover. While the Ciaz sedan launched in October this year and is rocking the car market, the S-Cross is yet to launch in India which is expected to happen by early next year. Prior to the Indian market launch, Maruti Suzuki is busy testing the crossover in the country. The test prototype model of the Maruti S-Cross has been spotted going about its test rounds on the outskirts of Gurgaon. While one auto portal caught the vehicle’s camouflaged exterior, another got luckier in catching a glimpse of the vehicle’s interior as well and the spy images have been splashed on the internet.
Crossovers are the new hot favorites of the fast developing and globalized Indian car market. While the rough and rugged SUVs have been always popular in the country due to the uncertain and difficult drive conditions of India, the new more stylish and urbanized SUVs/crossovers are highly in demands for their cool features and tough performance. The high success of the Ford EcoSport and the Renault Duster is clearly suggestive of the rise of this segment. Even the hatchback turned crossover models such as the Toyota Etios Cross and the Fiat Avventura are also getting good response. The upcoming Maruti S-Cross is thus, the Indo-Japanese car major’s contender in the growing Indian crossover market.
In the spy pictures, the heavily camouflaged Maruti S-Cross looks more like the immensely popular Suzuki Celerio that launched in February this year. However, the vehicle is larger than the Celerio. The vehicle’s wheel caps look very stylish while the wing mirror is placed on the crossover’s front door. Though under camouflage, the rear design of the S-Cross seemed to be a bit bland as compared against the rather conservatively designed but attractive front fascia design.
As for the interiors of the upcoming Maruti Suzuki S-Cross has been endowed with the several design bits from the various other vehicles from the company’s stable. The S-Cross’ interior features that have been spied include a power steering wheel, all 4 power window switches and AC vents. The new design element is the chrome insert around the AC vents as well as the controls on the dashboard which add a stylish and classy touch. The test mule which got spied did not feature a push button start/stop system, climate control or steering wheel mounted controls. The test vehicle could be a base variant and it is expected that the top variants will be featuring the mentioned missing equipments to fight with the market rivals.
The Suzuki S-Cross is already available in the international market powered by a 1.6 liter petrol as well as diesel motors, but these are unlikely to come in the Indian spec S-Cross. In India, it is expected to be equipped with a 1.3 liter diesel mill generating 90PS and 1.4 liter motor delivering 93PS.
