The Renault Captur will be positioned below the Duster.

French car maker Renault achieved great success in the Indian market with the Duster. It entered the much beloved SUV segment in the Indian market at the right time and enjoyed all the love from Indian buyers. It is originally a product of its subsidiary Dacia and has been a success not only in India but many other markets. This is because it has got the sheer presence of an SUV while carrying an impressive price tag and powerful yet fuel efficient engine. But in India it was overshadowed soon with the entry of sub 4 metre compact SUVs like the Ford EcoSport. To tackle the competition, Renault is planning to introduce a sub 4 metre compact SUV called the Captur.

The Renault Captur was first showcased in 2011 at the Geneva Motor Show as a concept car. It went on sale in Renault’s home market last year and has been doing impressive numbers. It is a premium offering there and it comes with pretty much all the luxury features you can expect in a compact SUV. In India however things will be a bit different. Cars like Ford EcoSport and Fiat Avventura have got a price advantage over the Duster due to the tax structure. Renault will strike back with the Captur by taking away some of its features and placing it below the Duster to compete with the other compact SUVs in the market. This will give them the tax benefits that other car makers enjoy on their compact SUVs and might lure a good number of buyers.

Launching an existing product instead of developing a new product from scratch will Renault cut down on the lead time of developing a new product. It shares the underpinnings with the Duster so they will be able to get some advantage due to the scale of production. The car looks pretty impressive and has got a crossover styling rather than a SUV face. It isn’t exactly boxy like the Duster and has got a consistent design. It will definitely appeal to young buyers with its styling.

This however leaves a big question. Earlier this year at the Auto Expo, Renault showcased the Kwid concept. It was being said that the concept will transform into a compact SUV for the Indian market. It is a creation of the Renault India R & D team and thus would have been tailor made for the Indian market. But still the Captur looks like a pretty good product for the Indian market and a worthy rival for the popular Ford EcoSport. Expect the Captur to share a large number of parts with other cars from the manufacturer. The Renault Duster has got pretty basic interiors that just serve the purpose. In the Renault Captur we might see some lively interiors to go with the exteriors of the car. Powering this car with be the 1.2 litre petrol and 1.5 litre diesel engines. A launch is expected in the year 2016.
