Renault India to launch lodgy MPV and a new small car in 2015
Renault’s Duster belied expectations and went on to become a huge success for Renault, but other products from the Renault stable failed to make a mark in the highly competitive Indian car market. Optimistic as ever, the company is now pinning hopes on two new models slated for release in 2015.
Of the two cars planned for release in India in 2015 one is the Lodgy MPV. Renault’s MPV will compete with the Ertiga and Mobilio. The other model is going to be a small car which will be positioned below the Pulse. This is a compact car aimed at the largest market segment where competition is very intense. Renault at present holds a measly 2.6% market share in the Indian automobile segment. Hopefully, these two new models should see its share rise to 5% next year or the year after. Renault hopes it can raise car sales to 3% by March 2015.
The Lodgy MPV will be priced between Rs. 7 to Rs. 10 lakhs. MPV`s and compact SUV`s are the fastest growing segment and are becoming hugely popular with consumers. Honda’s Mobilio, Maruti`s Ertiga, Ford`s Ecosport and Renault`s Duster are some of the popular models in the MPV and compact SUV segment. Renault has been eyeing this segment and has been testing the Lodgy MPV since quite some time. This leads one to believe that Renault will launch the Lodgy pretty soon. The Lodgy will be powered by a 1. 5 litre K9K motor which pumps out 85PS of power and 200 Nm of torque, this is the same motor that powers the Duster.
In the compact car segment Renault’s offering will be up against Maruti’s small cars, especially the Alto. In comparison to Maruti’s cars that sell in huge numbers, Renault’s Pulse sells on an average about 1000 units per month. Renault may introduce a competitively priced hatchback in the Rs. 3 to Rs. 4 lakh price segment in the hope of increasing volumes. Let`s wait and see if Renault finds success with these two models.
