Punto and Avventura Abarth versions coming soon

Fiat Avventura front view

The Abarth Avventura will be powered by a 1.4 litre Multiair engine.

Manufacturers have an advantage when they have an in-house tuning company. They take a normal stock vehicle, add lot more power, add other elements to handle the power and sell it to you as your everyday car. Mercedes has got AMG, BMW has got its M division and Fiat has got Abarth. Abarth has been turning cute little Italian hatchbacks into scary little monsters for a long time and they are quite popular in many markets. This is because while proper performance vehicles will cost a lot, the Abarth versions don’t come with a very steep price tag. So that is a quick, fast and affordable Italian car for everyone. What could possibly be better?

Earlier this year, Fiat showcased the 500 Abarth which is a performance car based on the popular Fiat 500. It was announced that Fiat will bring in the Abarth brand in India. While we were expecting only the 500, reports suggest that they will also bring in the performance oriented Punto and Avventura. These products will be introduced in the mass market segment thus appealing to a very wide range of buyers. The products will be named as Abarth Punto Evo and Abarth Avventura.

The current cars being sold in Indian market generate a maximum power of 90 bhp which won’t be any good for the Abarth name. So the Abarth Punto Evo and Abarth Avventura will come with the 1.4 litre Fiat Multiair engine. This is a turbocharged engine and generates a peak power of around 135 PS. With this engine, expect the cars to post some serious performance numbers. The cars will be able to do the 0-100 kmph sprint in just 8.5 seconds which is enough to scare many bigger cars. In fact that is almost in the Honda Civic and Skoda Octavia territory. The cars will have a top speed close to 200 kmph. The new engine will be a huge upgrade for the vehicles as the engines powering these cars currently don’t do justice. The chassis of these cars is very much capable of handling more power but the current engines don’t provide the required grunt.

The specifications that we mentioned above are true for the cars being sold in the British market. Here they might come with a slightly less powerful engine but it would still be pretty good. For now we don’t have many powerful hatchbacks on sale in our country. Volkswagen sells the Polo GT TSI which is an impressive car with 105 PS of peak power. Then there is the Mercedes A Class with a peak power of 124 PS and the BMW 1 Series with 135 PS of peak power. The Abarth will offer performance to match the Germans while being offered with a more sensible price tag. Unlike the Polo GT TSI which looks like the standard Polo, the Abarth Punto and Avventura will sing it out loud. They will come with Abarth kit, Abarth badges and better interiors. They will also get better suspension and safety features. Expect them to arrive in third quarter of 2015 with prices north of Rs. 9 lakh.

Punto Evo

The Abarth Punto will rival the likes of the Polo GT TSI.
