Premium Hatchback War: Hyundai Elite i20 vs Maruti Swift vs Volkswagen Polo vs Fiat Punto
The Indian compact premium hatchback market is super competitive with a number of car makers launching new models in this segment. The Maruti Suzuki Swift has been the sole undisputed leader of this segment which was also created by the Swift. The Hyundai i20 has been the Swift’s primary rival and the all new Elite i20 just launched on 11th August this year to heighten the market competition. On the other hand, there is also the new Fiat Punto Evo and the Volkswagen Polo. Let us compare these cars to see which hatch offers the best.
All the premium hatchbacks come with alluring designs. The Hyundai Elite i20 obviously looks fabulous with its Fluidic Design philosophy. The new Punto Evo also looks great with sharper styling, while the VW Polo offers bold styling. The leader Swift, though the oldest now, still has its unique charm.
The Hyundai Elite i20 obviously gets a highly feature-rich cabin featuring an advanced 2-DIN audio system, follow me home, automatic headlights and rear AC vents, push-button start, cooled glove box, lighted boot, etc. The new Punto Evo also offers some of the similar features including climate control. The Swift and the Polo are also feature rich, but the all new i20 being a complete new model surely scores higher in this respect.
The Elite i20 is powered by the same 1.2 litre Kappa petrol engine generating 82PS of power and 115Nm of torque. The Fiat Punto however, offers the biggest 1.4 litre FIRE petrol mill that churns out 89PS of power and 115Nm of torque. The Polo’s 1.2 litre petrol mill offers a measly 75PS and 110Nm. Nevertheless, the Maruti Swift’s K-series petrol engine is very powerful with 87PS and 114Nm. Both the Elite i20 and the Swift offer the highest mileage of 18.6kmpl. The Polo offers 16.47kmpl, while the Punto provides the least mileage of 15.8kmpl.
In the diesel version, the Polo’s new 1.5 litre diesel engine produces 90PS and 260Nm, followed by Elite i20’s 1.4 CRDi generating 89PS and 220Nm. The Swift’s 1.3 litre motor delivers 75PS and 190Nm, while the Punto is powered by the same diesel engine available in two states of tune – 75PS & 197Nm and 90PS & 209Nm. Here also the Swift offers the best mileage of 22.9kmpl, followed by Elite i20’s 22.54kmpl. The Punto delivers 21.2kmpl while the Polo offers the least mileage with 20.14kmpl.
The segment leader Maruti Swift is the cheapest starting at Rs. 4.42 lakh. The Punto starts at Rs. 4.56 lakh, the Elite i20 at Rs. 4.99 lakh and the Polo at Rs. 5 lakh. While the Swift remains the best value for money car in the segment, the all new Hyundai Elite i20 has got almost everything right. Moreover, the Swift will soon get its facelift, while the Honda Jazz is also on its way to India.
