Next-generation Punto codenamed X6H, 2016 Fiat Linea debuts on May 21

The new Punto will be based on an all-new platform

Famous Italian car brand Fiat, known for its popular hatchback and sedan models, the Punto and Linea, is working on the next generation version of these cars. The upcoming Punto hatch has been given the codename X6H for internal communication. End of 2016 is when the car will be launched in Brazil, followed by launches in other markets. The manufacturing process will take place in Betim City, Brazil. Fiat is working on a new 1.4 litre petrol motor which is capable of churning out 100 bhp of power output and 140 Nm of twisting force. The 1.8 litre engine which was recently premiered would also be plonked under the hood of the 2016 Punto.

Apart from this scoop, the 2016 Fiat Linea will make its global debut at the Istanbul Motor Show on May 21. It`s quite possible that the C segment sedan will be displayed at the 2016 Auto Expo which will be held in Delhi. A set of new engines, along with exterior and interior changes are what one can expect. The internationally acclaimed 1.4 litre T-Jet motor is expected to receive minor tweaks for enhanced fuel efficiency and better performance. The current 1.3 litre multi-jet diesel engine which is known for its mediocre performance might be ditched, to give way for a more powerful 1.5 litre diesel motor.

Both the Punto and Linea being competent cars in their respective segments have not been able to catch the prospective customer`s attention. Both the cars have been struggling to sell in decent numbers with heavy competition from leading brands like Maruti, Hyundai and Honda taking away the major share. The recently launched Avventura crossover, Punto Evo and the Linea combined together, just managed to sell a meagre 1200 units on an average every month. Fiat`s image in India has taken a beating and it would require a good amount of effort from the company to set right things.
