New Volkswagen Polo GT and GTI models to come to India
Volkswagen is planning to bring some of its performance oriented hatchbacks to India. VW would rather focus on a car that would please an enthusiast rather than mass-selling cars just to fill their bank account. The German carmaker took a bold step introducing the Polo GT TSI and Polo GT TDI models in the country, but surprisingly they worked well and quite a few can be seen roaming the streets. This goes to prove that an Indian automobile enthusiast wouldn’t mind paying a premium for better features (DSG200 gearbox, turbo petrol engine) in a small (hatchback) car. Volkswagen plans to introduce the internationally acclaimed Golf GTI to tackle the Merc A Class.
The Volkswagen Polo is sold internationally as the GT and GTI model, which produces 150 bhp and 189 BHP respectively. Volkswagen claims that the new Polo does a 0-100 kmph in about 6.7 seconds, which would probably make it the fastest hatchback in the country. The new Polo will come with adaptive dampers and a host of infotainment and safety features.
It will be much easier for the company to release these models in the country as the engines are already in use by other models in the Volkswagen group. The 1.4 litre turbo petrol engine is used on the Skoda Octavia and Jetta while the 1.8 litre turbo petrol engine is used in the premium version of the Octavia. These engines are mated to the lustrous DSG gearbox, and will come with ABS and ESC as standard. These cars will not exactly help the company achieve any market share, as they will be exorbitantly priced and their main aim is to expand their brand portfolio, and bring world class engineering to enthusiasts.
Even though the car will be partially assembled here, the car price will be way more expensive than most sedans. The Volkswagen Polo GTI is expected to have a price tag of Rs. 17 lakh (ex-showroom). To dream of having this car in your garage you have to be a hardcore enthusiast with deep pockets.
