New Hyundai Verna “4S” launched at 7.73 Lakh INR; can it beat the Honda City?

Hyundai Verna 4S side view

The C-segment of the Indian automobile industry has had a drastic rollercoaster of a year. With so many manufacturers introducing new sedans, and also re-introducing older ones, it’s an open market. Hyundai at one point of time was on top of the charts, but slowly its sales declined due to heavy inflow of new vehicles. Hyundai has taken an initiate to revive its brand name, with the reintroduction of the Verna into the market.

The Hyundai Verna “4S” has been launched, with a few design tweaks as well as improvement in driving dynamics. Hyundai has competitively priced the vehicle, and the car can be purchased at a starting price of 7.73 Lakh INR (ex-showroom). Considering the features this car comes packed with, it would be an ideal city sedan. The price tag could give the competitors something to sweat about!

Exteriors

The Verna Fluidic was an instant hit. The car was very well designed and was extremely well perceived in the Indian Automobile segment. The futuristic design, mated with extremely good fit and finish, helped the company increase its sales. The car was still doing extremely well, and the design did not look like it needed a makeover, however a fresh change is always welcome.

The front fascia of the car has been completely revamped.  A new two slat chrome grille designed in the shape of a wing is the first thing you can notice.
The headlight cluster has also been completely revamped, with projector
Lights as standard, with follow-me-home escort lights (though day time running LED’s will not be available). A new, bolder bumper makes its presence felt with a new fog lamp layout.

The side profile of the car however remains unchanged, with new alloy wheels making their presence felt. The rear end too is similar to the outgoing model, save a few changes on the tail light design and new sharper bumper layout.

Hyundai Verna 4S interiors

Interiors

The interiors of the car remain unchanged. The classic black and beige layout, coupled with generous amounts of chrome accents, give the car a premium feel. The fit and finish command the premium pricing of the car.

New features include a tilt and telescopic steering wheel, new infotainment system, 1 GB internal memory for multimedia. Also included is a new cool glove box, and foldable and electronically adjustable ORVM’s.

Engine & Driving dynamics

Though the Verna has the most powerful engine in its class, it lacked good driving dynamics. The engine in the car remains the same, but Hyundai has taken measures to improve driving dynamics. The car has been given a stiffer suspension setup, and a more effective braking system. The rear disc brakes have been removed in the manual transmission model.

The engine options available are:

1.4-litre petrol Hyundai Verna 4S – 107 PS and 135 Nm of torque
1.6-litre petrol Hyundai Verna 4S – 123 PS and 155 Nm of torque

1.4-litre diesel Hyundai Verna 4S – 90 PS and 220 Nm of torque
1.6-litre diesel Hyundai Verna 4S – 128 PS and 260 Nm of torque

There would be an option of a 6-speed manual as well as a 5-speed auto box.

This is Hyundai’s attempt to get back its market share, and increase sales. With the improved driving dynamics and a new design language, this car has all the right ingredients to make it a big hit. The pricing is fair, and the new Hyundai Verna 4S will surely make a mark! Only time will tell if the Verna will be able to beat the current C-segment leader the Honda City.
