New Hyundai Elite i20 based crossover spied testing in Ooty
South Korean car major Hyundai is very aggressive about the compact crossovers, as these are the latest hot cakes in the global markets. The auto maker’s strategy of new crossovers is also same for the Indian car market, as India is a growing market for compact SUVs. Come 2015, and Hyundai will be ready with its all new range of crossover models for India. Earlier, there was news of only one compact or sub-compact SUV from Hyundai in the form of the much talked about ix25 which was later confirmed for the Indian market by the company. However, in the more recent times news emerged about the imminent arrival of the new Elite i20 based crossover model that has been getting spotted in India while testing.
While the Hyundai ix25 SUV will be competing against the likes of the Renault Duster, Nissan Terrano and the upcoming Maruti S-Cross, the new Elite i20 based crossover or i20 Cross will be Hyundai’s warrior to handle the likes of the new Fiat Avventura, Toyota Etios Cross, Volkswagen Cross Polo and the Ford EcoSport. The i20 Cross started its road tests soon after the Elite i20’s global debut at the 2014 Paris Motor Show in October. Now, the new upcoming Hyundai i20 Cross has again been spotted while testing in the hilly roads of Ooty, Tamil Nadu.
The Hyundai i20 Cross was spied with its usual heavy camouflage. The crossover will be sharing several parts with the premium hatchback counterpart, but will certainly get additional features to pose as a feature-rich SUV. The spy pictures confirm the vehicle’s much needed increased ground clearance and new alloy wheels. The crossover will also get refreshed front as well as rear bumpers, and many other features such as black body cladding, skid plates and silver garnished roof rails to complete its rugged SUV appeal. Earlier spy pictures had also shown that the i20 Cross would flaunt LED daytime running lights and projector headlamps. Hyundai is also expected to further enrich the already feature packed interior of the vehicle with some more off-road friendly features to beat the market competition.
Under the hood, the upcoming Hyundai i20 Cross will be powered by the same existing engine range that does duty on the Elite i20 hatchback. The vehicles petrol variants will get the 1.2 litre engine delivering 83 PS of max power and 114.7 Nm of peak torque, mated to a 5 speed manual gearbox, while the diesel avatar of the crossover will be equipped with the 1.4 litre motor generating 90 PS and 220 Nm, coupled with a 6 speed manual transmission. Hyundai’s new i20 Cross will be joining the growing breed of hatchovers or hatchback-turned-crossovers that are drawing attention with their combination of hatchback like compactness, aggressive styling and mild off-roading abilities. The Hyundai i20 Cross is also expected to offer a great concoction of superb styling, rugged appeal, great feature list, enhanced rough road handling abilities and the compact practicalities of a hatchback.
