New-gen Volkswagen Passat GTE India launch in January 2017?


Volkswagen Passat GTE is set to make a comeback in the Indian car bazaar in January 2017. The Passat premium saloon made an exit from the domestic market last February, but the car maker announced its re-launch in the country. The 2017 Passat GTE was showcased in India at this year’s Auto Expo. The new-gen model is already available in international markets; for the Indian market Volkswagen plans to bring in the plug-in hybrid variant of the sedan along with the regular one.

2017 VW Passat GTE Expected India Launch Date

Autocar India reports that the German auto maker will introduce the Passat hybrid in the Indian market in January 2017. There has been no official confirmation regarding the launch date yet.

2017 VW Passat GTE Expected Price in India

The new-gen plug-in hybrid variant of the Passat GTE will arrive in India through the CBU (completely Built Up) route, so expect it to be priced higher than the regular model. The plug-in hybrid variant will be priced around Rs 40 lakh to Rs 45 lakh (ex-showroom), while the regular model is expected to be tagged at Rs 25 lakh – Rs 28 lakh (ex-showroom).



2017 VW Passat GTE Interior Design

The saloon offers premium features on the inside like a restyled gear knob, blue ambient lighting and leather wrapped flat bottom steering wheel. The cabin is sure to entice you with a head-up display, Audi TT inspired 12.3- inch digital instrument cluster and tweaked infotainment system. The luggage area has been extended by 26 litres; the hybrid model offers 586 litres of total boot space.

2017 VW Passat GTE Exterior Design

The front fascia of the GTE looks aggressive, it features front moulded bonnet and flared wheel arches fitted to bigger alloy wheels. VW is also offering LED head lamps with Light Assist fitment as an option. The new-gen model also features C-shaped fog lamp having chrome finish and blue accents on the radiator grille.



2017 VW Passat GTE India Specifications

The regular petrol variant of the Passat GTE is fuelled by a 1.8-L TFSI engine that delivers power of 180 bhp and torque of 320 NM. Transmission options available are a 6-speed manual and 7-speed DSG automatic gearbox. When mated to an automatic transmission, the engine churns out 250 Nm of torque. We expect the oil burner to debut a bit later, the 2.0-L TDI is capable of producing maximum power of 170 bhp and peak torque of 350 Nm.

Coming to the Passat GTE petrol-electric hybrid model, it is equipped with a 4-cylinder, 1.4-L TFSI petrol unit and an electric motor having 9.9Wh lithium ion battery. This engine kicks out 164 bhp of power and the electric motor delivers 113 bhp, the total power output therefore stands at 218 bhp. The car maker is offering a 3.6kW quick charger with the saloon that enables it to be fully charged in 2 hours and 30 minutes, through a power plug it takes 4 hours and 15 minutes to charge completely. The regenerative braking system also aids in battery charge while driving the car. The peak torque produced by the hybrid powertrain stands at 400 Nm.
