Mercedes-Benz GLS officially unveiled, is super classy
Successor to the GL-Class, GLS has finally been unveiled by Mercedes-Benz prior to its official uncovering at the upcoming LA Motor Show. According to the company, GLS is the only full-fledged seven-seater in Europe’s premium SUV segment. But does it really hold the right to be given such a title, let’s find out.
Talking about the design, the GLS is a humungous SUV, among the biggest luxury SUVs in the globe. Front end is reminiscent of the S-Class, as expected. Mercedes has given it a lot of chrome in areas like the side skirts, under-guard, roof rails, luggage compartment handle and the shoulder line. The Sport variant on the other hand that is available on the GLS550 has more muscle to show off with sporty bumpers, side skirts and massive 21-inch AMG alloy wheels.
Interior is as luxurious as an SUV can get. The dashboard is simple and elegant, housing a new instrument cluster and a 3-spoke steering wheel that gets multiple buttons. The whole cabin is finished in Nappa leather like the steering wheel. An air ionization system to improve air quality is also being offered as optional. Customisation options includes the choice of having a wood finished steering wheel, long list of trim materials for the dashboard and door panels, optional 8-inch touchscreen COMAND Online infotainment system with an intuitive touchpad and ambient lighting with three different colours. This system lets one access car data like the status of windows, doors, tyre pressure, mileage and much more. One can connect to accident recovery and after-sales service through “Mercedes connect me”. This system also includes an automatic emergency call.
Powering the Mercedes-Benz GLS are a range of engine options such as:
• GLS500 4MATIC – V8 biturbo engine with 455 HP and 700 Nm
• GLS450 4MATIC – 3.0-litre V6 biturbo engine with 362 HP and 500 Nm
• GLS350d 4MATIC – 3.0-litre V6 diesel with 255 HP and 616 Nm
• GLS63 AMG – 577 HP and 760 Nm
All the non-AMG engines will be paired to a nine-speed 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission.
The Mercedes-Benz GLS comes equipped with loads of safety technologies as well including Collision Prevention Assist Plus, Attention Assist, Crosswind Assist, Brake Assist, Cruise Control, Pre-Safe System, ESP, electronic all-wheel drive traction system 4ETS, windscreen wiper with heating function, Magic Vision Control, optional LED Intelligent Light System and much more.
Technologically, it gets six transmission modes with the Dynamic Select, optional off-roading package and AIRMATIC air suspension.
