There was a time when Mercedes was the undoubted leader of the luxury car market in India. Now however, with increasing competition the German car maker is expanding its product portfolio to appeal to a wider audience. Apart from the updated sedans, we saw the entry of the excellent A Class hatchback. Mercedes-Benz also came up with the mighty CLA 45 AMG with the most powerful production 4 cylinder engine. The GLA crossover was also launched recently in the Indian market to compete with cars like X1, Q3 and V40 Cross Country. Now Mercedes has decided to cater to the enthusiasts and will be bringing the GLA 45 AMG to India.

AMG models typically have a higher level of performance, more aggressive looks, better handling, better stability and extensive use of carbon fiber than their regular Mercedes-Benz counterparts. The GLA 45 AMG will be launched on October 27th will be powered by the same engine that is found under the hood of the CLA 45 AMG. The 2 litre four cylinder direct injection petrol engine generates a peak power of 355 bhp and a peak torque of 450 Nm.

Obviously to handle all this extra power, there are other changes as well. The suspension has been altered and the crossover now sits 15 mm lower than the standard car. This would allow it to go faster around bends and reduce the body roll during high speed corners. It also features a new gearbox which is quicker than the one found on the standard car. There are lot of visible changes that would separate the standard car from the AMG version. All the cosmetic changes on the outside make this car look sportier than the standard GLA.

The changes include different bumpers that look sportier, different grille, quad exhaust pipes, and rear diffuser and red brake callipers. Changes are not limited to the outside of this car. There are noticeable changes inside the cabin as well. It has a sporty flat bottomed steering wheel, red coloured seatbelts and contrasting stitching on steering wheel and seats.

The Mercedes Benz GLA 45 is expected to be offered with rear AC vents, a touch screen infotainment system, large 19 inch alloy wheels with better rubber and automatic climate control. The AMG variant is expected to be powered by a four wheel drive system unlike the standard variant which is front wheel drive. There haven’t been any concrete reports on the pricing but for an AMG Mercedes, it is going to be more expensive than the standard variant. Prices are expected to be in the range of 60-70 lakhs. The standard Mercedes Benz GLA class is also an impressive vehicle. It has been launched recently in both petrol and diesel variants. Prices start at Rs 32.75 lakhs and go up to Rs 36.9 lakhs (ex, showroom New Delhi).
