Celerio`s succes has prompted Maruti Suzuki to offer AMT option on most of its cars

Maruti Celerio

The Maruti Suzuki Celerio is the first Indian car to be powered by an AMT transmission.

India`s leading car manufacturer Maruti Suzuki constantly endeavors to offer products with India specific features and technologies to ensure the continuity of its long market dominance. In keeping with its strategy, Maruti Suzuki had introduced the AMT or Automated Manual Transmission technology for the first time in India with its new Celerio in February this year. Despite being an absolutely new technology, the AMT became an instant hit with the Indian consumers which resulted in more footfalls at Maruti showrooms.

In fact, the Celerio AMT version’s popularity even crossed the expectations of Maruti Suzuki. Thus, the Indo-Japanese car major has decided to introduce more AMT equipped models, both new and old in its product portfolio. Maruti has decided that most of its car models will come with an AMT option in the future. The AMT is a highly beneficial and economical automatic gearbox option which amalgamates the power of manual and automatic transmission. While it offers the convenience of automatic gear changes, it also offers great fuel efficiency similar to or even higher than the manual transmission models. The AMT gearbox also offers the great flexibility of choosing from automatic and manual mode options. And the best part of the AMT cars is that they are much cheaper than that of the conventional automatic car models.

Thus, Maruti Suzuki created a new revolution in the Indian car market with the launch of the new Celerio AMT compact hatchback that offered the convenience of an automatic gearbox for the tough traffic conditions of the urban roads, while also keeping it highly economical and efficient. The introduction of the AMT by Maruti Suzuki changed the very concept that automatic cars are costly with expensive running costs, and thus can be afforded only by the affluent class. India being a highly price conscious market welcomed the introduction of the convenient AMT gearbox by Maruti Suzuki. And soon many of the other car manufacturers in India are already considering launching their own AMT models. Indian car major, Tata Motors has already launched its AMT powered Zest compact sedan, which is also a success. Maruti has also recently launched the new Alto K10 with an AMT gearbox.

Maruti Suzuki faced shortage of supply of the Magneti Marelli sourced AMT gearbox in the face of high demand for the Celerio AMT, but Maruti has stepped up the supply and the AMT gearbox will also be produced in India from next year to curb the problem. As most of the Maruti Suzuki vehicles are known for their cost efficiency, thus the introduction of the AMT option in most its cars is a very practical choice for Maruti. Maruti Suzuki contemplates to equip most of its cars with AMT, excepting its current and upcoming premium vehicles such as the Ciaz sedan which will have the more refined and costly CVT automatic gearbox. Maruti will offer the AMT variants in the Swift, Stingray, Ritz, Ertiga and probably the upcoming YRA premium hatchback as well in both petrol and diesel versions.
