Maruti S-Cross launched; Priced at Rs. 8.34 lakhs
Maruti has finally launched the much-awaited S-Cross at a starting price of Rs. 8.34 lakhs (ex-showroom, New Delhi). The crossover has been in the news for quite a while and has a lot of expectations from Maruti. The S-cross will be the first of many premium offerings from Maruti. It will be sold exclusively at the new premium Maruti Nexa dealerships. The S-Cross is Maruti`s chance to shed its image as an economical automobile major and show the industry that it can dominate the premium car segment as well.
Maruti Suzuki estimates that there would be about a 100 Nexa dealerships spread across the country in the first 6-8 months. This means that the sales of the S-Cross will not be as high as conventional Maruti offerings. Coming to the S-Cross, the Japanese carmaker has gone all out with this one to make sure it seals a good image for itself. Its previous attempts to enter the premium car segment failed miserably with the Grand Vitara and Kizashi. The company has clearly invested its years of experience and research into developing the S-Cross.
The car is set to take on the likes of the Ford Ecosport/Renault Duster/Hyundai Creta and the Nissan Terrano. The S-Cross is more of a rugged hatch back with a go anywhere attitude rather than a compact SUV. It comes with skid plates, cladded plastic padding all over and roof rails. This gives the S-Cross a rugged look and super rough and tough feel about it.
Coming to its mechanicals, the S-Cross will be available with two engine options – 1.3 and 1.6 litre turbo diesel variants of the vastly famous DDiS engine. The 1.3 litre oil burner will be mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox and will produce 89bhp and about 20.39 kgm of torque. The more powerful 1.6 litre motor will be mated to a 6-speed manual box and will bang out 118 bhp and 32.6 kgm of torque. Along with performance the engines promise to be fuel-efficient too (ARAI figures of 22.7kmpl for the 1.6L and 23.65kmpl for the 1.3L).
Apart from new engine offerings, Maruti has gone a step further to enhance the features on the inside. The fit and finish of the interior trim has a premium feel to it. A host of new features like projector headlamps, reverse camera, climate control and a new touch screen infotainment module (called the Maruti Smart play), ABS and airbags will come as standard on all the available trims of the S-Cross. The car will be offered in 5 trims namely Sigma, Sigma (O), Delta, Zeta and Alpha.
