Made-In-India Maruti Suzuki Ignis Introduced In South Africa

The smallest SUV from Maruti’s stable- the Ignis was introduced in the domestic market in January 2017. The SUV is being manufactured at Gurugram facility and has already commenced exports to Indonesia earlier this year. The Maruti Ignis was recently launched in South Africa and has already started heading there. The vehicle will be sold as Suzuki Ignis in South Africa and will be offered in the range of South African Rand 169,900 to 204,900 (Rs 8.59 to Rs 10.27 lakh in Indian currency). Just like India, the Ignis is available with a 1.2-L petrol unit and two transmission options. It will be seen rivalling Mahindra KUV100 in the niche micro SUV space and also Hyundai Grand i10 and Volkswagen Up!

The Ignis will be sold through the auto major’s standard showrooms in South Africa as Suzuki does not have the Nexa premium chain of dealerships internationally. The micro SUV is being introduced in two trims- GL and GLX, the GLX variant gets the Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) option as well. The Ignis borrows its engine line-up from Maruti Suzuki Swift, it makes use of the similar 1.2-L petrol and 1.3-L diesel unit coupled with a standard manual and optional AMT unit. The millennial car- Maruti Suzuki Ignis has been selling around 5000 units every month in the country. It is popular due to its spacious cabin and never ending list of features that include touchscreen system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Maruti Suzuki Ignis Exteriors

maruti-ignis-front

Maruti says that the Ignis is a urban compact car. In simple language, it is a hatchback crossover; a segment that currently houses the Mahindra KUV100. To give the car SUV-ish characteristics, Maruti designers have given the Ignis a vertical nose, while the front fascia houses the wide chrome-lined grille, squarish headlamp housings with LED projectors and U-shaped DRLs.

The side profile is characterized by 15-inch black alloy wheels, a thick c-pillar with the three strips, beefed wheel arches and lower body cladding. The ORVMs are mounted on the doors and come with integrated turn indicators. Meanwhile, the rear gets a steeply inclined windscreen that reminds of the erstwhile SS800, while the tailgate houses the number plate area in the centre, and two-piece taillights at the corners.

The cabin is characterized by a tablet-like touchscreen system which is the display for the car’s SmartPlay infotainment system. It supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with Mirror Link connectivity. The steering is all-new, with a U-shaped insert in the lower-spoke. It also gets integrated control buttons for the infotainment system. Behind the steering is an infotainment display that houses a massive speedometer in the middle, MID screen on the right, and an analog tachometer on the left.
