Maruti developing next Generation Wagon R With 7-Seats & Diesel Power
Compact SUVs and MPVs are becoming the hot fav. MPVs were already loved by the car market here; it is just that there weren’t many options for us to choose from. Maruti Suzuki tried to enter a new segment with the Ertiga and was quite successful in doing so with the Ertiga MPV. Soon after the Ertiga, we saw many other manufacturers try to register their presence in the segment. Chevrolet came up with the Enjoy which failed to get much attention. Honda came up with the Mobilio which is giving a tough competition to the Ertiga with its stylish design, better engine options and better brand value. So now Maruti Suzuki is planning to introduce a MPV even below the Ertiga that so that they can stir up the number game once again.
The Wagon R isn’t a very impressive vehicle but it has been one of the bestselling products for Maruti Suzuki. This is because it has been a cost effective and easy to own vehicle. Over the past 14 years, it has managed to sell almost 15 lakh units in the Indian market. Now they are working on the third generation Wagon R which will be launched in 2017. While until now this car has been seen only as a hatchback in the Indian market, now we will also see this in a MPV variant. The new product is being developed by the codename YCA. It will be a 7 seater vehicle based on the same platform as the Wagon R and will also come with a diesel engine option.
This concept car YCA Wagon R was first seen at the Indonesia International Motor Show in September last year. This 7 seater vehicle offers three rows of seating and it would be less than 4 metres in length. As we said, this new product will sit below the Ertiga as a budget MPV offering and Maruti Suzuki will be targeting high volumes with this car. The car is already being developed at the R&D centre of Maruti Suzuki in India. This vehicle will also be exported to Indonesia as CKDs. In the Indonesia market, it will qualify as Low Cost Green Car which will earn it tax benefits.
In India, it will compete with the Datsun Go+ which is very much a similar kind of product. The Go+ is based on the Datsun Go which is a low cost hatchback. While a petrol engine with options like CNG has been mainstream on Wagon R, a diesel engine will be seen for the first time on the vehicle. There are no details on what diesel engine will be used here. It is also possible that they will use an engine developed in house for future Maruti Suzuki products. Maruti has got many products lined up for the near future and this will be one of them. They will also be launching a new premium hatchback next year and a compact SUV later.
