Mahindra TUV300 AMT witnesses surge in demand

Mahindra TUV300 front three quarter

Mahindra’s new entrant in the compact SUV segment, TUV300 is witnessing high demand especially for the AMT equipped version which is available in two variants namely T6+ and T8+. Available at Rs 8.52 lakh (T6+) and Rs 9.12 lakh (T8+) these variants are priced much higher than the base trim tagged at Rs 6.90 lakh (ex-showroom Pune). A direct rival to Ford’s EcoSport, TUV300’s starting variant is approximately Rs 1 lakh cheaper than former.

Despite being expensive, the clear preference for highly priced AMT version of TUV300 shows the rising popularity of clutch-less SUVs in India. Thankfully for Mahindra, TUV300 being the first AMT equipped compact SUV in its respective segment skewed sales its way posing a strong threat to rivals. Mahindra’s in-house engineers with a little help from Ricardo, Europe developed the new AMT gearbox for TUV300.

With around 12,000 bookings in its kitty within two months of launch, the company is currently producing 5000 units of the SUV per month. However, the company could rev up production capacity if required in future. Mahindra is also evaluating options to commence exports to other markets. The company witnessed substantial growth in year on year sales in the month of October after a long period of snail paced sales courtesy newly introduced TUV300 which roped in 4,551 unit sales in October. Mahindra expects the monthly numbers to stabilize even after the festive season ends.

Elated with response received for the AMT equipped TUV300, Executive Director, Mahindra & Mahindra, Pawan Goenka said that of the total bookings so far for the SUV, the AMT equipped variants chip in almost 50 per cent of the demand. He further added that this kind of response is contrary to their expectation as they had anticipated higher demand for the competitively priced entry level variants. Hence the waiting period for the SUV is primarily because of the lack of AMT equipped variants.

Drawing power from the tweaked mHawk80 engine, the 1493cc diesel power train comes mated to a manual or AMT transmission. Furthermore, featuring a twin scroll turbo charger, the mHawk80 produces a healthy power output of 82.85 bhp and 23.45 kgm of twisting force. Measuring below 1500cc, the engine qualifies the SUV for the compact segment resulting in lower excise duties.
