Mahindra plans to unleash 3 compact SUV`s in the Indian market by 2016
Mahindra & Mahindra being the SUV leader in India was the first to understand the potential of the sub-4 meter SUV segment in the country, and launched the Quanto SUV which became very popular. The sub-4 meter compact SUV segment is a very lucrative and popular segment now, with all the auto majors eyeing it. However, the Quanto is not that popular now, as other newer models like the ford Ecosport and Renault Duster have caught the fancy of the Indian consumers.
However, the Quanto being just a slashed version of the Xylo SUV found very few takers in the Indian market. Now we`ve got news that Mahindra is planning to launch 3 compact SUV`s for the Indian market to cash in this lucrative segment and to beat the market competition.
In an interview with a news channel, Mahindra & Mahindra’s executive director and president of auto & farm equipment, Pawan Goenka said that the Indian auto maker has three entirely new small SUV models based on new platforms in the pipeline. While one of these three new compact SUV models will be a commercial vehicle, the other two models belong to the very competitive UV segment of India. Goenka also said that Mahindra has been working on these new platforms for the past two to three years.
It is already known, that the first among these new compact SUV models from Mahindra will be the S101, which has been testing in India for long and has been spied on numerous occasions. The codenamed S101 compact SUV will launch next year. The second compact SUV is the all new Bolero’s sub-4 meter version which has also been spied a couple of times. The third model is the updated new Quanto.
The first and the most anticipated among these three upcoming compact SUVs from Mahindra is the S101, which is expected to be smallest entry level model in the Mahindra portfolio, while the refreshed Quanto is going to be slotted above the S101. The all new Bolero compact SUV is expected to be slotted at top- end of the compact SUV line-up from M&M. Mahindra will also introduce a newly developed petrol mill for these new vehicles. The new engine is expected to be a turbocharged petrol mill keeping in line with the current industry trend of small, efficient turbo petrol engines.
Goenka, also said that the Indian UV segment especially the compact SUV segment has reached a new level, and Mahindra has lost some market share for not having proper models in this segment, but the company will come up with new products next year to make up for this loss.Mahindra’s upcoming mini SUVs will have to compete with the likes of the Duster, Ecosport and Terrano which have tasted success in the Indian market. Many carmakers including Maruti, Hyundai and Honda are also planning to launch compact SUV`s in the future.
