Is Maruti a successful premium player with the Ciaz?

Maruti Ciaz holds the second position in terms of sales after the Honda city

Maruti Suzuki has had problems to make a living in the premium car segments previously, with the Kizashi, Vitara, Baleno and SX4 not really managing to impress car buyers when they were launched in the Indian car market. However, the company finally seems to have cracked the premium segment thanks to the Ciaz sedan. It was able to hijack the number two spot in the segment by unseating the Hyundai Verna, sitting right behind the Honda City.

The Ciaz is actually the car maker’s third attempt in the C-segment and Maruti Suzuki has managed to become third time lucky. The Ciaz boasts of the biggest dimensions in the segment with the most rear-seat legroom and good features. Added with Maruti’s great re-sale value and after sales experience, the company might soon become a well-established player in the segment.

Coming to the statistics, when the Ciaz was launched in the market, the vehicle has been registering sales of about 4500 units a month as compared to the average sales of around 7500 every month for the segment leader Honda City.
What didn’t come as good news for the Indian car major is that performance of their latest model was also affected by the recent market slowdown when the model found 3700 new homes in June, as compared to selling more than 5000 units in the previous month. However, since its launch, Maruti Suzuki has managed to sell more than 45,000 units of the Ciaz sedan in India and the car’s overall performance can only be summed up in the coming few months.

Due to certain supply constraints of a few variants of the Honda City, the top-end petrol variants (V, VX) of the City still have a waiting period of almost two months, while waiting period for the petrol automatic (SV, VX) stands close to three months. Diesel variants on the other hand are available instantly, due to the recent drop in diesel engine popularity.

In the meantime, competition between the two very capable sedans is expected to remain the same in the coming future, unless Hyundai manages to come up with something spectacular for the Verna.
