India’s Top 4 Fuel-Efficient Sedans
One of the biggest factors taken into account by the Indian demographic while purchasing a new vehicle is fuel efficiency. The India automobile market is filled to the brim with manufacturers trying to outdo each other in terms of fuel efficiency. In a country where you’d be spending your hard-earned money on fuel (petrol or diesel), fuel efficiency (kitna deti hai) overshadows other factors like power.
One of the engines that changed the game was the DDiS engine introduced by Maruti. Originally manufactured by Fiat, Maruti chose to use it on its Swift hatchback. A small capacity diesel engine, which had an ARAI claimed mileage of 23.19 kmpl, was unheard of, that too at a time when petrol prices were going sky high and diesel was heavily subsidized.
Soon other manufacturers like Honda and Toyota started plonking in diesel engines under the hood of their hatchbacks and sedans, in a hope to lure the Indian consumer, having seen Maruti tasting success with the Swift and the Dzire.
Here’s a list of the most fuel-efficient sedans on sale currently.
1. Maruti Ciaz SHVS Hybrid
It’s called the SHVS, and it incorporates a mini Hybrid technology to increase the fuel efficiency of the already outstanding DDiS engine. The 1.3 liter oil burner in the Ciaz SHVS pumps out about 89 BHP and about 200 Nm of torque. Combined with the Hybrid technology, the fuel efficiency goes up by a huge amount. That gives it an Arai rating of 28.09 kmpl, making it the best in its class.
Ciaz SHVS mileage: 28.09 kmpl
Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Price: Rs. 7.31 lakh – 10.17 lakh
2. Honda Amaze/Honda City
Honda city remains one of the favorites of the Indian buyers. It has been a hit since its launch back in the late 90’s. Awesome looking Japanese cars with powerful engines, what’s not to like?
Until recently Honda did not have a diesel engine to its name. Because of this they were losing all their customers to Toyota and Maruti, who had already incorporated their diesel engine into different segments.
Honda took note of this and went ahead and developed their own diesel engine, and incorporated it into most of their products.
The Honda Amaze was the first to receive the new engine. It returns an astounding mileage of 25.8 kmpl (ARAI certified).
Recently the much-loved fourth generation Honda city received the upgrade and delivers an ARAI certified 26 kmpl.
Honda City Price: Rs. 7.60 lakh – 11.90 lakh
Honda Amaze Price: Rs. 5.23 lakh – 8.25 lakh

This car is loved by customers, the ones who use it for personal as well as by those who use it for commercial purposes. The Dzire is the most apt sedan made. It has the luxury of being spacious, the economics of the vehicle won’t burn a hole in your pocket, the fuel meter won`t drop every 2 days and the Maruti badge will ensure reliability and mental peace. The Dzire has an ARAI certified mileage of 26.59 kmpl.
