i20 Active crossover pics & engine details; 4 important facts
The Hyundai i20 Active is the Korean carmaker`s entry into the much hyped hatchback crossover segment. Of late there has been an influx of crossover hatches in the Indian market. This trend was started by the Volkswagen Cross Polo followed by the Toyota live Cross and the recently launched Fiat Avventura. Hyundai is definitely not late to the party and the i20 Active looks quite promising.
What is it?
Hyundai knows the market pulse and has launched cars which appeal to the public; the Elite i20 is testament to that. The Active i20 is nothing more than a rugged and adventurous looking version of the Elite i20. The company wanted to cash in on the growing popularity of this segment and took its best looking hatchback and gave it a makeover. This is an easy way for auto companies to build a pseudo SUV without having to spend any moolah on the design and development of an all-new car. The Volkswagen Cross Polo and Etios Cross have only exterior cosmetic modifications to distinguish them from their hatch counterparts, while Hyundai has gone ahead and raised the ground clearance by 20mm from the i20 Elite to 190mm, though it misses out on a tailgate mounted spare wheel which is present on the Avventura. The i20 Active gets black cladding all around the base of the body; roof rails at the top and skid plates. The car gets 16 inch alloy wheels, large fog lamps at the front and rear, and projector head lamps with day time running lights. The i20 Active gets a two tone interior colour, while the design and equipment list remains the same.
The i20 Active gets the same petrol and diesel engines currently doing duty in the hatchback. The petrol engine produces 83 PS and 115 Nm of torque, while the diesel motor churns out 90 PS and 220 Nm of twisting force.
Hyundai claims to have tweaked the engines for responsiveness and as a result the i20 Active sees a slight drop in the fuel efficiency figures compared to its hatchback counterpart. The petrol motor`s efficiency has dropped from 18.24 kmpl to 17.19 kmpl while the diesel is rated at 21.19 kmpl compared to the 22.54 kmpl which the hatchback delivers.
The Hyundai i20 Active is expected to be priced between Rs 6.5 – 8 lakh (ex-showroom).
