Hyundai reveals new 1.0L, 1.4L Turbo Petrol Engines & 7-Speed Dual Clutch Transmission
The whole automobile industry is moving towards forced induction from naturally aspirated engines in favour of efficiency. Volkswagen is already working towards phasing out almost all the naturally aspirated engines they make and even other manufacturers are doing the same. Even the Ford Mustang now comes with the option of a small turbocharged engine so it inevitable in case of smaller vehicles. Right now Hyundai hasn’t got any turbocharged petrol engines in their India line-up but soon the Korean car maker might add some engines to their line-up in India.
At the Paris Motor Show, Hyundai Motor revealed a new line of small displacement engines which are turbocharged. They also showcased a new 7-speed dual clutch transmission system for a wide range of vehicles. The engines showcased there differ in terms of displacement, power output and would serve in different Hyundai family vehicles. The smallest engine is 1.0 T-GDI 3 cylinder turbo petrol engine from the Kappa family. This engine will be seen under the hood of 2015 Hyundai i20. The peak power will be 120 PS while peak torque would be 172 Nm.
The other engine from Hyundai Motor is a 1.4 litre T-GDI 4 cylinder turbocharged petrol engine. It was showcased earlier on the concept CNG car i30. This engine in CNG mode generates 117 PS of peak power and 206 Nm of torque. Both these new engines will be an addition to the Kappa family of engines. The turbochargers used here are single scroll type. The engines have got electronically controlled waste gates to improve efficiency and also a six-hole GDI. Both these parts work in conjunction to make the engines efficient, green and powerful while giving them impressive throttle response and low-end torque.
The 1.0 T-GDI engine is based on the 998 cc Kappa petrol engine. This would make a great addition to the i20 line-up in India. The variant powered by this engine could be offered as a performance variant of the standard car like in the case of Volkswagen Polo TSI. The Polo GT TSI comes with a 1.2 litre four cylinder turbocharged petrol engine which generates a peak power of 105 bhp and comes mated to a seven speed DSG gearbox. The Ford EcoSport comes with a 1.0 litre turbocharged EcoBoost engine which generates a peak power of 126 bhp. We recently saw Tata Motors introduce a turbo charged petrol engine which displaces 1.2 litres and generates a peak power of 90 bhp.
Along with the new engines, Hyundai Motor also showcased the new gearbox that we mentioned earlier. This 7-speed dual clutch transmission would serve in Hyundai`s future automatic vehicles in place of the dull and lazy automatics they have been using until now. It uses an electrically operated actuator for the two dry clutches. There is an external damper that reduces NVH levels. The gearbox would help provide better fuel efficiency and smooth power delivery.
