Hyundai Kona – Everything you need to know about the compact SUV!
After teasing its first ever compact SUV for the past three months, Hyundai has finally revealed the Hyundai Kona in the international markets. This marks the Korean automaker’s entry into the rapidly growing compact crossover segment, which is seeing increased customer interest across the globe. The Hyundai Kona will sit below the Tucson and the Santa Fe in the company’s portfolio.
Hyundai has also announced that the Kona will first go on sale in Korea, followed by American and European markets. A few Asian countries are also expected to receive the car sometime next year. However, there is no information yet on whether the company is prepping the compact SUV for the Indian market as well. Rumour mill has claimed that Hyundai might showcased the Kona at the 2018 Auto Expo in Greater Noida.
In a huge departure from Hyundai’s regular design language, the Kona gets some rugged and aggressive design elements. There is thick black cladding that runs all around the car’s lower body panels. The front and rear get unconventional headlamp and taillight arrangement. The roof slopes down at the rear to give a floating effect to the car’s silhouette, and the wheels are housed under beefed up wheel arches. All these aren’t very Hyundai-like traits. Are they?
Well, it is obvious that interest in the Hyundai Kona in India has been enormous. The love for compact SUVs in the Indian market is a well known fact. And with the country’s largest carmaker – Maruti Suzuki already in the market with the Vitara Brezza, it is obvious that Indian will be looking forward to the second biggest carmaker to make an entry in the segment. And with the Kona, Hyundai India surely has a product to attack this particular marketplace.
So, till we get more concrete information on the Hyundai Kona future in India, we have compiled a list of everything that you need to know about the Hyundai Kona and the possibility of its Indian launch.
Hyundai Kona India launch possibility
Hyundai unveiled the Kona compact SUV internationally in June 2017. The company hasn’t made an official announcement about the crossover’s prospects of coming to India anytime in the future. However, it is a well-known fact that the Indian compact SUV market is currently at its all-time high. Hyundai, being the second largest carmaker, doesn’t want to miss all this interest in the market. As a result, it is surely looking forward to introduce its contender in the compact SUV market in India.
Remember the Hyundai Carlino design study concept that was showcased at the auto expo last year? It showcased the company’s ability to develop an under 4 meter SUV for the country. Though the Kona isn’t under 4m, the overall length can be trimmed to suit the Indian market. Moreover, it is not yet clear whether the under 4 meter excise duty benefits will be applicable after the implementation of GST from July 1, 2017.
Hence, there is a high chance for Hyundai to launch the Kona in India sometime next year. If this happens, the Kona will become Hyundai’s competitor to the likes of the Maruti Vitara Brezza and the Ford EcoSport.
