Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) is all set to launch an all-new SUV, codenamed GS (called the ix25 in International markets) in the Indian market. After the recent i20 Active launch, this is touted to be the next big launch in the compact SUV segment. As per speculations, the launch is expected to happen sometime in August. The Hyundai small SUV will compete with the likes of the Renault Duster, Mahindra Scorpio, Nissan Terrano and the upcoming Maruti Suzuki SX4 S-Cross.

Having been spotted testing several times on Indian soil, the Hyundai GS SUV measures 4.27 meters in length. It will surely miss out on the excise duty benefits offered to the compact SUV category. Mechanically, the base variants will come powered by similar powertrains (1.4-litre 4-cylinder diesel mill) seen on the Hyundai Elite i20, i20 Active and the Verna. Being a small capacity engine, the Korean carmaker would have the advantage to price the SUV very competitively as diesel engines under 1.5-litre capacity attract lower rate of taxes.

Cosmetically, the styling of the small SUV is somewhat similar to the ix35 model and comes equipped with wrap-around headlight cluster, lower air intakes which house the front fog lights. The front grille on the Hyundai GS sports a different design when compared to the ix35. The new Hyundai SUV will sport 17-inch alloy wheels and will come with high quality interiors.

Without creating any confusion, the GS model will purely be a 5-seater and not a 7-seater. There is still no word if Hyundai will offer its 4WD technology, at least on its top end version. As the company has invested a large some of over Rs 1,000 Cr into this project, it aims to achieve high localization content of at least 90 percent in the country. As per reports, the Hyundai ix25 is expected to be priced between Rs 8-10 lakhs (Ex-showroom).
