Honda compact SUV to be a seven seater; will compete with the Duster
The compact SUV market in India is a hot segment with most manufacturers mulling to launch products that cater to this niche. Now Honda is looking at launching a vehicle in this segment considering the success of the Ford Ecosport and the Renault Duster.
We previously reported that Honda would be launching a compact SUV by late 2016 in the Indian market. Many reputed auto portals reported that the Japanese carmaker would be bringing the Vezel to India but this did not materialize as bringing the car to India meant high production costs for the company which was not a viable option. The Vezel is not a sub 4-metre SUV and hence would not get the required excise duty cut.
As per latest news reports Honda India took many of its dealers to Japan where the company`s R&D facility is located. The Japanese public multinational corporation gave them a peek of the production ready version of the SUV. The Honda SUV is not actually compact and will be a seven-seater. It will rival the likes of the Nissan Terrano and the Renault Duster.
The new SUV will share its underpinnings with the Mobilio MPV and may share some of the parts with the Multi-purpose vehicle, it will look like a proper SUV with large wheels, body cladding and skid plates. The upcoming SUV is expected to get a high quality cabin as Honda India received a lot of flak for the basic interiors on the Amaze, Brio and the Mobilio.
There is no information on the mechanicals but we expect Honda to plonk the award winning 1.5 litre i-VTEC and 1.5 litre i-DTEC engines under the hood of this SUV. The company will be showcasing the vehicle at the 2016 Delhi Auto Expo with the launch expected to happen towards the year end.
