Honda BR-V SUV to be launched in India in 2016
It has finally been confirmed that Honda will be launching the BR-V compact SUV in the country by the beginning of next year. The BR-V will take Honda’s name forward in the SUV space and will become the second SUV in India. The BR-V will break cover in India at the upcoming 2016 Auto Expo in February.
Taking inspiration from the Mobilio MPV, the Honda BR-V is actually underpinned by the same Brio platform as the Mobilio. However, the upcoming vehicle has been made to look more rugged with black plastic cladding all around, more ground clearance, 16-inch alloy wheels and roof rails. Though Honda claims that the BR-V is actually an SUV, it has a more MPV like profile with the elongated body design.
Anyhow, the vehicle should do well in our country given the fact that it will carry the Honda badging. Powering the compact SUV will be the same 1.5-litre i-DTEC diesel and 1.5-litre i-VTEC petrol engines that can also be found on the City sedan. Power will be sent to the front wheels through a 5-speed manual gearbox, but the petrol model will get an optional CVT as well.
The interiors will be similar to the City and the recently launched Jazz. Honda is expected to borrow many parts of the BR-V from the two other mentioned models. Its production should start from Honda’s plant in Tapukara, where the Amaze and City models are also manufactured. With prices expected to start from Rs. 9 lakhs (ex-showroom), it will rival the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Nissan Terrano, Mahindra Scorpio, Renault Duster, Tata Safari, Mahindra XUV500, Maruti Suzuki S-Cross and the upcoming Tata Hexa up to some extent.
