General Motors preparing a Beat based compact sedan; expected launch in 2017
If there is one auto manufacturer which is still deep in trouble despite the revival of the Indian car market situation, then it is the American car giant General Motors. Surely there are also others who are still struggling with adequate sales, but GM being an imminent global car major is in a terrible situation in India. Thus, the company is working hard to find a turning point in India. GM is planning big to launch many new products in new segments including the very popular Indian sub-4 meter compact sedan segment. The company is also looking to enhance its exports from India as a part of its market redemption strategy in the country.
In keeping with its new market strategy for India, General Motors is reportedly preparing a new compact sedan based on its popular Chevrolet Beat hatchback. The new Chevrolet sub-4 meter compact sedan will share the same M300 platform as the Beat hatchback and would be introduced in India along with the next generation model of Beat in the year 2017.
The new compact sedan from the house of GM is still codenamed as the MCM, and it will be launched before the upcoming cars based on the Global Emerging Market platform hit production. The compact sedan market in India is one of the most popular segments in the country and is attracting many new car makers. General Motors (GM) offering new products in this segment is certainly going to help the company boost its sales and improve its market share from the present measly 2.2 percent.
While, Tata Motors and Hyundai have already successfully launched their compact sedans, others such as Volkswagen and Ford are ready with their plans to launch new cars in this profitable segment. Thus, GM is not the only one who will join the competition. Ford India is ready to launch its new Figo based compact sedan in mid 2015, while Volkswagen is busy working on its Polo based sedan to join the bandwagon by 2016. The current crop of compact sedans available in the market is Maruti DZire, Tata Zest, Honda Amaze and Hyundai Xcent.
The new Chevrolet Beat based compact sedan is likely to carry over the powertrain range of the ongoing Beat hatchback model comprising of 1.2 litre petrol and 1.0 litre diesel motor options. Developed on the next generation Beat model, the upcoming Chevrolet compact sedan will flaunt a new design language, and is expected to offer more interior space and comfort apart from the added boot space as compared to its hatchback counterpart.
GM alongside launching new offerings is concentrating on improved exports from the underutilized Indian manufacturing facilities. The company has to cope up heavy losses and thus, improved exports are necessary along with enhanced domestic sales. GM is also going to commence the exports of the current India made Beat hatchback to Chile. The company is also looking to export to markets such as Mexico, Latin America and South Africa from India if possible.
